DTD was essentially the 'worst' gearbox for A8s. I'd just drive it until it dies, as pretty much your only other option is a replacement box.

well the value of the car depends on 3 things ...condition, condition and condition
point is , it's probably heading for the breakers as is , so little value , but you can't complain at your loss for 18 months pleasurable motoring at the price you paid but what would you have to lay out to replace it ? and what sort of guarantee would that have ? at least if you spent money on this you would know what you had and the value when you came to sell it would be higher than it is right now ! maybe a new unit from ZF/ audi would be too expensive , but there are gearbox specialists about who would fit you a rebuild with a 2 year guarabtee for a considerably lower price in the meantime keep your eye open for a used unit with the correct code , people on this forum are good at spotting such things and will tell you if they do ! |

Yeah - I guess. As much as I love it, it is quite impractical for me as I travel a lot with bicycles on board and an estate would really make a lot more sense. I have and old Passat estate which is battered but bulletproof - currently SORN but doesn't need much to get it back on the road. The sensible thing may just to see what I can get for the A8 and get the Passat back on the road for the mean time. Then when I'm a little more flush with funds an A6 estate would be lovely...
I may just post it up in the classifieds here and see if there are any takers. What sort of money would you get at a breakers? I gather all the aluminium makes the scrap value pretty high? Seems a real shame for such a car to go to it's grave though ![]() |

well , nothing to stop you SORNing it for the moment and see what turns up ; the age of miracles may not be past !
but as a final throw of the dice , why not contact your mechanic , explain that after his labours the car is now scrap , and ask him to double check that the fluid level is correct , stranger things have happened if the to and fro on the box hasn't had the desired effect during the fill wouldn't take him 10 minutes and after £300 he can afford it ! |

I would concur. Your symptoms sounds like low fluid, and its unusual that a box gets worse immediately after a flush, unless the flush wasn't quite right.
Its quite possible after a bit of a drive the oil has seeped into places it didn't manage to do on the ramp and now the level is a little down. I once had to take a car back twice to get the level right.... and once filled properly, it was sound.

when the box was factory filled they put in 9.8 litres after dropping the sump it will sometimes take as little as 8 litres ! how much is drained out doesn't seem to be an exact science ! |

My mechanic is sick of the sight of the thing... He does me a lot of favours otherwise so I am not going to push the point with him. I think I will take it to Vanmatic as planned and see what they come up with. I have posted a classified ad here so if anyone would like to make me an offer in the mean time by all means feel free!
Thanks for all the advice and info! |

Ok, update with good news! Thanks for the above advice. I did go back to my mechanic and asked if he wouldn't mind double checking the oil level as I'd heard (thanks to you guys) that the level may settle after being driven. Sure enough, they got another 2.5L in there! Now drives at least as well as ever while in my possession so very pleased I persevered. Driving it home was such a joy, but I'd reached the conclusion while it was ailing that it really didn't make sense to keep it.... Especially so given changed work circumstances requiring more mileage and I can't really justify a third car in our household of two just for occasional use....

but 2.5 litres ? that sounds more like enemy action than poor workmanship !!! surprised you could drive it at all ! but frankly it bears out the advice from the experienced members here who say only go to experts in ZF boxes to get this done , not even an audi agent ! I notice that one of our irish based members recently went to scotland to get , as they say where I come from , a proper job but sell it ? sounds like the sort of think you might regret ; at the end of the day I don't suppose that there is actually a member here who can justify having such a car , I certainly can't Last edited by oldnick; 15th June 2015 at 03:15 PM.
