joking aside , I have used seat belts since 1963
one of the directors of my company had a bad crash and was lucky to survive ; his surgeon told him that , had he been wearing seat belts he would probably escaped with some cracked ribs

the company issued an instruction that all company car drivers must have seat belts fitted to their vehicle , and that not to use them was a dismissable offence , they were a PITA , no reel belts in those days , but on one occasion they saved me from a much worse pain when I went in a dyke , hit a patch of black ice under a tree on a bright clear sunny morning !

I have a friend who was involved in a bad accident a few years ago, he was on the fosseway which is a very straight Roman road running north from Cirencester across to Leicester. The road is very undulating over all the hills and slopes of the Cotswolds.

He was driving along in a 7 series BMW and when he came up from one of these dips to the brow of the hill he faced another car which was overtaking another vehicle and was on his side of the road. The old lady driving it had not thought about unseen cars hidden in the dips and had just overtaken thinking the road was all clear a way ahead. He swerved to try and miss her but the two cars hit head on on the corner of each car as he swerved away into the verge and he took off and his car rolled into the fields to the left.

The other lady driver was unfortunately killed in the impact and my friend was only saved from the same fate by the fact that he was in a big 7 series BMW and that his seat belt saved him from much worse injuries. He had a year long recuperation from the accident and still has some aches and pains but his kids still have a dad. Sobering stuff and something that makes me think that driving around in a car as big and strong as an 8 is a very good idea.

"Clunk Click Every Trip" as they used to say.

Now there's an ad I bet we won't see back on TV any time soon!

The three point safety belt we all use is the most important safety device in the modern car, followed by, interestingly, ESP. Not airbags or ABS, or what have you.

Volvo developed the seatbelt we all know and use, and allowed other manufacturers to use their idea to great effect. I understand why taxi drivers are permitted to not use theirs, but for others it is indispensable. I hate 'elf an' safety' as much as the next bloke, but when it saves the lives of those close to us, like seat belts and ESP do, it's hard to argue against such things.

The taxi thing should be scrapped IMO there is no logical argument for them not to wear them.

Seat belts have saved plenty of lives but prevention is better then cure and therefore it's a last line of protection, Abs, esp and all other innovations that we are seeing coming into cars these days is what's really making a difference followed by airbags, crumple zones and belts.

All that said if Scott or anyone else feels like driving without a belt, then that's for them to do the risk analysis and decide for themselves.

I always wear a seatbelt.
The first post was a joke and not serious in anyway.
With out belt I feel like I'm driving naked and I've done that and I don't like it.
So always have a belt on.

Even in lorries (my dad is truck driver).

Roberto, I got two dogs. So if they can get to the keys after getting past the dogs, fair play.

But the key (soon to be two, I got to make one for the wife) are hidden by the coats.

I agree with tonup, it's a 50%50 argument on best way to do the keys I think.

mate you dont know the half of it taxis can carry children even babies without belts as long as they sit on a grown ups knee outside the seatbelt
there is a massive argument about this on the net from parents

As a bus driver I am allowed to drive without the safety belt as long as I have passengers on board, when empty I have to wear the belt.
But then I am supposed to carry a bale of hay for the horses that I no longer have.
If I need to relieve myself I am allowed to use the offside front wheel as a target, and if a policeman sees me he has to protect me with his cape, that is no longer issued.
