Neil from what you've posted I'm pretty sure it's the Hall sensor.

This might be a coincidence but I've just had a leak on the steering rack fixed and now it smells like ATF is dropping onto the near side cat but I had the output seal done on the gearbox a couple of years ago.

I don't know if the smell and the crank sensor going faulty are related as both started within days of each other.

Is there anything else down there that can leak ATF?

The one Neil posted is camshaft position sensor. It could be causing the problem as well. I would not be throwing money around before diagnosing the exact fault. Anyway crank sensor would be this one:

I've taken your advice and booked it in with Unit 20. The probability is the crank sensor but just to be sure.

Thanks for placing that seed of doubt ainarssems

Give yourselves a pat on the back. You were right.

I've had the crank sensor replaced by the lovely peeps at Unit 20. She now starts everytime.

Happy days

Looks like I'm starting to get these symptoms too - difficulty starting, especially when hot. However it still struggles when starting from cold in the mornings (did it today). Once it's been running a few minutes it's fine, by which time it's switched over to lpg.

The temp gauge works fine but I'm wondering if the ecu uses a seperate temp sensor to the gauge and maybe it's playing up as so can't adjust the fueling correctly when it's starting? I can test the crank sensor as described on Elsawin and at least it doesn't sound to bad to swap.
