That's true, not forgetting how many leaps and bounds oil has come along since 1998 though! A good 5w40 or 0w40 I'm sure would keep the engine right.

Who's to say that crappy oil cooler bolted behind everything lets the oil heat up too much in certain driving conditions? Anybody ever installed a temp guage to find out?

Air-to-oil cooler works better. Lots of big high-power V8 motors run air oil coolers. The water coolers are less than durable, and degrade over time. Even basic I4 engines with water coolers (Golf I & II GTI) suffer the same issues, with water and oil mixing.

My old RS2 was running 430 hp when I sold her, and had a raised rev limit to 7200 rpm. She still had the factory air oil cooler, and it worked a treat. Of course I wouldn't just run an S8 motor with a non thermostatically-controlled air oil cooler.

Interesting, the 3,7 V8 32V doesn't even have an oil cooler.

When you think of servicing your car's radiator, or even adding coolant, you think of sitting in a hot traffic jam in 100-degree July heat. But it's just as important for your radiator and antifreeze to be up to snuff for winter driving. In cold climates, the antifreeze in your radiator keeps many parts of your engine from freezing solid.....
