Well I've done some more investigating and have some suspicions about the nature of the problem.

My thoughts are that dried-up gear lubricants, combined with dirt/debris/spiders etc. are probably a significant factor and affecting both original and replacement units.

Has anyone ever taken these things apart and have any idea what sort of lubricant (oil, grease or what) is used and what the gears/stops are made of (metal or nylon probably)?
Further is it possible to take them apart for cleaning and reassembly or at least flush through with lubricant and squirt in something suitable that will last?
I can't see any obvious way in for either purpose, but that doesn't mean it's impossible.

I have had a communication back from A8parts and it wouldn't be appropriate to comment on that other than to say it was fair and reasonable.

e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Well, I've made some positive progress.

I think I've pretty much got one of my non-folding mirrors back into full working order; now going to try the same technique on the other one and see where that gets me.

Having a variable-output "generic" laptop DC power supply that can supply different voltages in small steps from 12V up has been quite useful.

My nearside mirror's folding function is rather 'flaky' to say the least, and is annoying me because everything else works fine....

And of course I do now have a "spare" PF (May 1998 build) nearside mirror mechanism of the "folding plus memory" variety (and a couple of spare door trim clips). Supplied to me by A8parts and now thoroughly lubricated and working well.
I'd probably just keep it as a "known good" spare but I have my price.
