I had worse than that on non-OEM brake pads, recommended and fitted by a very well-known independent in my part of the world.
This was on my PF S8 where the front pads have 2 pads each side of the disc on maybe a single backing plate, so 8 smaller pads of material in total at the front. I had one of the two inner pads come away from the backing plate on each side, so it wasn't visible to a quick inexperienced inspection but braking was relatively poor. Even worse the garage didn't spot it at first either when I asked for the brakes to be checked. First thing they did was say the master cylinder was leaking and needed replacing, something I can't prove either way now but paid for!  So I was braking using two outer pads and one inner on each side at the front. It was "balanced" but obviously not as effective as it should be. Replaced them with branded Audi pads eventually, which I paid for (no refund on the failed ones they supplied). Never did resolve things satisfactorily with the garage, so I haven't taken my business there since.

Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors. e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course.  (internal dimming mirror added later)1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer. And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Can you recall what make the non-OEM pads were that were fitted, or did the garage not tell you?

Never did find out, would have said if I knew for sure.
 Funny thing is I actually found one of the pads lying on the road outside my drive and it looked too small to be relevant to an S8. Showed it to a mate of mine (ex garage trade) and he didn't think it was off my car so it got binned. At that time I didn't realise there were 8 of the things on the front!
