It's very high quality stuff. It's made in Germany. And it's quite modern.

Looks like some sort of AMI cable, but I'm not familiar with those systems.

Nice one is the hdd inside that enclosure too?

Do Audi make a 5/5s cable? I bought one of those adaptors (genuine apple) and you can't use it with a bumper on the phone - even Apple's own one!

Ah, now it all becomes clear, I've just remembered this post, ostensibly about foglight switches IIRC:

>> is the hdd inside that enclosure too?

AMI is essentially a media player with beautiful integration with mobile phones, hard drives etc. It has Line-Out that can be connected to anywhere you want. But if we connect it to RNS-E 2010+ with a couple of CAN bus wires we get perfect integration.

There is no hdd inside, but you can connect hdd full of WMA or MP3 files with another cable. And three's plenty of space for hdds and stuff in that D2 driver side shelf! I like that shelf much more convenient than glove box, as it's for the driver

There's even a solution for A2DP bluetooth streaming -- p/n 4F0 051 510 J.

>> Do Audi make a 5/5s cable?

I haven't seen one. How about lighting extension lead?

>> I bought one of those adaptors (genuine apple) and you can't use it with a bumper on the phone - even Apple's own one!

Bumper with iPhone -- this is such a bad taste -- I don't get it

I haven't driven car yet -- I just passed a point of no return

But yes, D2 with RNS-E 2010+, AMI, MFSW, Bluetooth Phone and TV Tuner all genuine Audi is a possibility.

I've found all sorts of issues with IOS7 and aftermarket adapters of one sort and another. However I do have a genuine Apple HDMI lightning adapter and using that as the final lightning connection resolves everything.
IOS sees the genuine adapter so is happy and the adapter is dumb enough to accept any reasonable sort of power/data connection to it.

Care to share the critical additional "tricks" yet, or would you rather wait until it's all proven and can have its own detailed thread?

The critical trick is that early RNS-E 2010+ units which support AMI, optical parking etc. will fit D2s without the need of CANGATE and CAN Gateway (these are two different things BTW -- just google).

The unit which qualifies for D2 installation is '193 B' or '193 C' from A3 cars with transplanted A6 faceplate. Hardware version should be below or equal to H04 -- these needs to be verified via CAR menu in the unit since most stickers are fake. These units have reversing wire pin (needed for rear view camera) and understand gala by wire.
