Cheers - makes sense - might have to have a look at this (how much is a box so that if I don't like it etc, I can put an un-moded one back in?)

Clive, I have not seen a Cone filter yet for any '8. I have seen a BMC air filter which are meant to be good, it drops in place of the old air filter. I will try and get some sound bites/video and upload them to youtube. Just finished off a tank in one night and half a day so will do it later, just got in after hooning it around, im addicted to the sound, also bumped into a black RS 4 B7avant, the guy gave me a nod so I caught up and spoke to him, his passenger said thats the car from Ronin aint it? I said yeah then made him boot it off in sport mode, first time anyones really acknowleged the S8. Other '8 drivers dont bat an eyelid
Oh, someone in my business class told me today 'feckinn hell mate your car sounds amazing, just like a Saxo' but he meant it as a good thing, nearly made me cry!!

Don't worry, it really doesn't! I know the diffrence betwen the sound of a four pot and a V8, this sounds almost V10.

I did this to the A8 aswell, not the same throaty sound. A lot louder though and deffently V8, just not as good as the S8. Will try and get some soundbites.

A cone filter, in my humble opinion, is not agreat idea. Unless you are running so much power that the standard air box cannot flow enoguh then one can help, if it's designed, along with a self contained box. However, under normal circumstances a mildly modified Audi will benefit from a performance PANEL air filter in the standard box.
The standard box draws cool, un-disturbed air from the wheel arch and then proceeds to smooth it's flow through the air masss meter and into the inlet tract. This improves the effieciency of the engine as the air flows smoothly, and more quickly into the inlet manifold, helping the variable length manifold do it's job. A cone filter draws air, even with a "cold air feed" pipe, from the engine bay which is hot, turbulant and dirty. The shape of the cone filters usually induces a swirling effect too which causes turbulance in the inlet tract/manifold and often an incorrect air mass signal! - Not so good! They often reduce the torque output of an engine.

As for drilling the 'box, not bad at all IF drilled in the right places. The holes must be in an area protected from the hot, nasty engine bay air, such as the edge hard up against the inner wing, and boxed off so that it only draws air from behind the head lamp. This is a good area to draw from. If drilled carefully then it will give better throttle responce, free-er revving and actually make the engine more efficient as the losses caused by inducting air are reduced....... slightly!

And, it WILL, as Amar states, sound chuffin' great!!!

OK OK....you sold me! Ironically I was just checking this site for an intake mod. I was going to purchase the breather from lltek (for approx $160) and found your article. I've seen that box somewhere before, maybe for sale on another post. In any case I will be doing THIS tomorrow!!!
