If cleaning the laser doesnt solve it, there is a good auto electronics guy near Cork that can refurb the DVD unit. His company is called "KC Systems". A refurb of your own unit saves the hassle of having to code a replacement unit.

Extortionate annual road tax (€1500) and the availability of a VRT rebate in Ireland has seen a lot of used A8's, Q7's etc. exported in the last 2 years.

Default MMI / NavBox - 3D requirements ...

For information and clarification for those still waiting to go to 3D on the D3

The 3D aka 'birds eye' view requires that the NaviBox knows how to do it [NaviBox firmware update] and the MMI knows how to offer it as an option [MMI update].

In Europe, the MMI level was, I believe, updated to support 3D viewing in 3.4.60 [3460] which was released late 2006/early 2007.

The NaviBox firmware has always been updated by the Navigation DVD [there are no NaviBox updates on MMI disks]. The earliest firmware I've seen is 1030, but as this update was supplied on the initial 2007 DVD, there must be at least one earlier version which I've never seen in any VCDS logs.

The 1030 version introduced major problems [navigation didn't work] for MMI versions below 2120, so Audi reissued the 2007 DVD with a new part number that included firmware version 1040. [See Audi Technical note 2015658/4]. I would assume the 1030/1040 versions put the 3D view in as they date from around the same time as the 3460 update.

The final version of firmware is 1060 and is dated Aug 08, so I presume it was included on the 2009 DVD, which is, of course, 2008 mapping data!.

On that basis, MMI 3460 and Navigation DVD 2007 seem to be the minimum requirements for 3D on a D3 A8.

Looks like I'm going to have to send the nav unit off for a service. I took it out but then radio etc won't work with the link missing. Will something like the loop shown in the attached link plug straight in and allow the radio to work while the nav is removed ?

Thanks . I'll have to order one so. The repair may take a couple of weeks and lack of radio etc would drive me nuts.
