Bleeding the brakes is a doddle normal bleed nipple to play with, hand brake as you say, threaded bar twists and pushes the piston out. Easier job if you have a caliper rewind tool as you'll be working the mech quite a bit to free it up so it returns all the way i reckon, that said i did manage with a G-clamp and pipe grip

Here is my rewind tool

Just getting piston out will not give you full access to clean all the rust out. You need to take it completely apart. When I did mine one of the circlips went flying and was never found. Luckily I had old caliper from A6 C4 lying around from which I could scavenge missing circlip.

I never took the piston out, i just prised out the bar enough to clean the rust off and snapped it back together with plenty of WD and 3in1

My rear calipers are Lucas but everywhere i phone are listing it as Girling, and also are the 32valve rear calipers the same on the 40 valve as there is a difference in price the 32 valve caliper is priced at 63quid for a remanifactured one and the 40 valve is 100quid so will they both fit my car ?

need to order them asap

Lucas / Girling are the same thing mate,

I'm not sure about your rear calipers as they are slightly different that the PF type i have

But i wouldn't think there would be any differences for 3.7 or 4.2 on the back anyway.

Default Just a shot in the dark

A while back I had rear brakes changed on a s6....anyhow the mechanic said rear calipers were same as those on vw...might be worth looking into that for comparison ie go to local vw scrappy and compare calipers to one on urs...I think it is worth looking into...Might save u some hassle...

In terms of control arms I think u got good price but for future reference allgermanparts are really good...

All FL cars have the same numbers for rear calipers in ETKA
4D0 615 423 E - left
4D0 615 424 E - right

PF cars have different numbers and 2 options depending whether they have solid or vented rear disks.

Those part numbers come up as only suitable for 1999-2003 A8 and A8Q in ETKA.

They might look the same to naked eye but be slightly different or maybe even physically same on outside but different diameter piston inside
