I love this country

In Latvia if you drive in pothole and damage your car it is your own fault if you did not see it because you were not paying attention to road or did not have suitable sitting position or going too fast to brake or avoid it.

Yeah fair comment but there is no road taxation in Latvia so I assume no one is responsible.

I don't think it’s right that you have to pay an extortional amount of money to use the road network and then wake up dead.

Think about all these tests that car and tyre manufactures do, all the bullsh*t about stopping in the wet / dry. Do they test for missing road surface and how quick the tyre will stop the car when it’s bouncing off the surface? I imagine not.

I’d expect I wouldn’t be the only person that would be an emotional wreck if someone was killed by not being able to stop. ABS is useless if your wheels are bouncing and not in contact of the tarmac.

Yes there is taxation in Latvia. For S8 like mine road tax is around £135 a year and tax on petrol makes 98 cost £1.27 a litre and that's with average monthly salary of £550.

It's a hire car, and my wife's friend was informed of the risks. Her words? "Not my problem, if you think I'm going to give you a penny towards hire, think again. And as for losing the claim, think again." Gulp.

I feel bad though, I helped her source the Bora, it's the twin of my sister's car, only my sister's is a TDi PD 115 and 5-speed.

I work for a credit hire firm and we've dealt with a few council related accidents. We've not had any problems with them as far as i can remember. once they've realised its their fault they get it done asap.

This is my understanding too.

Update:

As I posted earlier, the Bora has been written off. The Council have been great, I'm surprised. An offer has also been made, will find out tomorrow what it is, and if she accepted.

Don't forget, once a reasonable offer is made the loan car will go pretty quickly, if not immediately.

Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Latest update:

The Council finally settled, after three rejected offers (I didn't think you could reject more than twice).

My wife's friend is looking to buy a 2007 Audi A4 2,0 TDI. She's found one in Ely, and I'll be going to check it out on Saturday, but it looks like a great car. Full VAG, 39,000 miles and more importantly, one owner. Bone stock, just the way she intends to keep it.

The Bora's being picked up sometime next week, it's got a nice set of Audi TT 7,5"x17" Flat (Fat?) Fives which I'm going to liberate. So on Saturday, I'll be taking three 15" steels down to fit, with the original spare making up numbers.

All worked out well in the end!
