No, you'd explode the average multimeter trying to put car starting currents through them!
There are battery testers available that very quickly dump a high current, usually into a heating element, to check that sort of thing.
Places that sell batteries will have one and gladly test it for you.

Or you can measure voltage while cranking. Disconnect cam position sensor to prevent car from starting and measure voltage at battery terminals while cranking. If it drops below 8.5V battery is on it's last legs, if it stays above 10.5V it's good. 9-10V is also acceptable.

Cheers Mike , very helpful. My current winter tyres are about to come off for this year (at long last....), but this is definitely one to consider for later in the year. Hopefully it'll be at least 5/6 months before the summer tyres have to come back off again!

Thanks for your input regarding this issue. I have yet to purchase a multimeter due to this issue sorting itself out!

Who ever stated that the battery may be the issue I think may be correct. I had a feeling this A8 was sitting for a long time before I purchased it and indeed battery level may have been low. I have now used the car every day and hopefully given the battery some charge.

I have only had the issue twice in the last month or so now very much reduced.
