Well. I never thought this would happen, but this is incorrect!

Both mats in the photo are upper mats. The lower ones have a lump of foam attached to the underside iirc. The holey eyelet fits flush with the button that protrudes from the floor, so you couldn't place another mat on top of it.

Anyway, anyone want a new front set of PF mats?

I would be quite interested in the OEM rubber ones....anyone any idea on part numbers for that by any chance?
Could not find any for PF cars.
For FL cars could not find any for rhd front but there is 2 options for lhd depending on year 4D1061501A for 10/98-11/00 and 4D1061501B for 12/00-09/02 and only one option for rear 4D0061511 same for rhd and lhd.

Caps are listed separately on ETKA, it is possible that one was lost and rest were removed to match

I suspect that the caps are PF fittings. I've had 2 FL 8's and all were 'holey' fittings - we'll have to investigate this essential bit of '8 trivia at the next meet!

I am off the PC with Etka now so cannot check but I am pretty sure there were caps for both PF and FL because there are only 4 colors for PF but FL has more colors and there were more then 4 different caps available

I'll get the camera out again at the weekend and photograph the fitted mats - I'm sure there's no way a cap would fit anywhere

What I said was definitely correct, but I didnt look at your photos at the time and I confess, I cant work out what on earth you've got there.

The lower mats do have foam, yes, and the upper ones do not. The drivers side one is always smaller as it doesnt intrude into the pedal area.

Both mats, upper and lower should secure through 1 pair of lugs, with the lower mat sitting down low enough for the top one to click on top.

I'm quite sure the make up of pre and post face will be different, for the drivers side at least, as the post face for example had the kick down switch under the throttle pedal, which pre face does not. Passenger side may well fit.

In either case, getting a colour match will be hard. The only colours that were in both pre and post face was platinum, aka light grey, which is the colour you appear to have on the right of your photos ? And then still, the material will differ....

Just clean the old ones...

I wonder if they were different for 2002? There's a set on ebay marked up as 98-01 and they appear to have caps too. But both my 2002 '8s don't have caps and there's nowhere a cap would fit. They have a 'polo' shaped plastic piece around the hole in the carpet which clicks into place with the stud on the floor. When in postion, the stud is flush with the 'polo'.

Photo to follow - how sad are we?

Here are the photos of the fromt mats and fittings in my 2002 S8.

First is the upper mat in place
Second is the upper mat removed showing the floor stud poking through the lower mat
Third is the upper mat removed from the stud showing the 'polo' fitting

Definitely nothing missing and definitely nowhere to put a 'cap'.

So, if there's anyone else following this amazingly mundane thread, if you have a 2001 and/or a 2002 '8, what are the fittings for the front carpet mats like. I'm getting fairly confident that it's caps (see photos earlier in this thread) to 2001 and 'polo' (as photos on this post) 2002. I also suspect that the 'polo' fitting was used in the early D3s.

I am in process of re-installing ETKA now to a newer version with online update and should also have offline VIN search feature so should be able to match exact parts to car's VIN number and also more up to date prices.
