Belts is indeed a major expense that as a seller you'd want to avoid and as a buyer you'd want the seller to stump up for!

When were the belts last changed? Date/miles?

You're looking at about £450 in parts by the time you've done the serpentine belt, water pump, 'stat etc. If you can't do it yourself then expect the labour bill at dealer rates to be not far off the same again.

Any car with this mileage will be bought on condition above anything else - if it looks like it's done 150k then most people will walk away unless it's very cheap.

The seller can point out prices for other A8s till the cows come home, but if none have sold, or haven't sold for the asking price, then it's irrelevant.

I agree with sarg that at £2.5k it'd be worth viewing, but if he's firm on price it's not worth the effort of travelling as if you fall in love with it you'll end up paying more than you should. I got £2,250 off the asking price for mine when I bought it just by being cheeky/the only interested buyer

I don't like the second car. The color makes it look dull and muddy. Those RS6-style wheels look too small, they need to be genuine RS6 19's for the D2 to carry them off.

The first one looks good, neither have navigation, but the wheels, Xenon Plus, auto-dim make me lean towards the first. The 20" wheels will be genuine, replicas were only available up to 19".

Over-priced though, the seller's asking for S8 money. The mileage is heavy, though the rebuilt trans again swings things back in its favour.

Your choice bud, but left to me, unless the seller of the first car dropped at least £500 off the asking price, I would walk away. Even at £3000, it's on the expensive side, new trans or not. There are nicer cars out there for less money, without Starship Enterprise miles.

Good luck!

Just received this reply from the seller when I suggested that the price was a little steep for me...

"Thanks for responding.
When I get the belt service done I have a very good friend who used to be a master tech at both Crawley and Epsom Audi to do it for a fraction of your price. He did our A6 Allroad bi turbo belt a few months ago. He started out on his own and within three years has built up a garage with a very good name and London South TPS top sales outlet for genuine parts. All the small garages in the Crawley area and even the local Audi Centre take problem jobs to him as he just knows them inside out. He specialises in R8 and RS vehicles and uses a top spec beissbarth unit for full geometry and A/C jobs. He is also one of the only garages who will rebuild a multitronic 7 clutch pack gearboxes with software update. The Audi Centres will just replace the box as its quite a job.
I may be able to persuade him to do the belt service if you pay the asking price. Just to put you in the picture, the master teck now at West London Audi used to work on this car when it came in to Epsom and he always wanted to buy it as the chap spent so much money on it over the years.
He was at my friends garage when I turned up with it and he remembered the car straight away.
That said, I had a quiet smile to myself when your mail came in as I get to keep it a little longer....But don't let the other half know!"

Even with a timing belt replacement, the price is still on the high side for a high-mileage A8.

I agree, should be a maximum of £3k with the belt done and thats if you really like the car and its as clean as it looks. Otherwise youre down to £2.5 k or even less

Thanks fellas. Good job I have your wisdom at hand. Id have been skint and unhappy by now without you!! (hold on, thats what I did with my Legacy TT!! I found the owners club after an impulsive heart over head purchase and so so quickly lived to regret that one...)

Seller comes across very arrogant, and his price is too high, I'd offer what you think it's worth then walk away and leave him to sweat on it

+1 - he's smugly thinking he's got you by the short and curlies! Make offer and let him stew - it'll still be for sale in 2 months time at that price
