I am no mechanic, and the work you have done already way surpasses my knowledge and skill... but I always thought the ATF cooler was a separate unit from the "main" radiator?

Its built in to the end tank of the radiator
 Its more of a heat exchanger than a cooler really, the same as the engine oil 'cooler'. It keeps everything at coolant temperature, and dissipates excess heat into the coolant and out via the radiator.
