Strange electrical issues

Thank you very much for the extensive reply Steamship!

I will work through all of your points and will update everyone in a week or two, I am already aware and are working on some items already.

I sprayed contact cleaner into the plug for the wiper motor and it appears to have fixed the issue completely.

Rear brake pads are on order (they are low but not enough to show on the dash yet, if these cars do that)

An AMP was repaired by the garage just before I bought the car (something I noticed on test drive) so I will ask them which one and investigate, the tweeters are currently stuck in the up position, and they produce sound. They look very easy to remove so I'll leave that till last.

I still haven't been able to replicate what happened on the way to Manchester, so I'll start by looking at the door handle and 02256 code!

All of these codes appeared when the car 'lost' electrical power, it's worth noting that the dash threw loads of errors, and then immediately cleared. Everything that is showing as having an error due to low voltage, works perfectly fine.

Everything seems to point towards a similar code "Function Limitation due to Under-Voltage"

I have tested the battery and alternator myself and at two different garages and they both said there's nothing wrong there. I've checked as many fuses as I can find, I can't seem to locate this strange issue.

If the voltage is good at the battery, there's quite a voltage drop somewhere. VCDS measured it at 11.5v during the scan. Have you measured the voltage at the fuses?

Just noted down what I spotted from your latest scan, and there is a lot relating to voltage, some due to a battery disconnect, but others not so.

The voltages in Address 13 are all over the place (maybe the values are correct for the relevant part), and those are causing the errors in Address 01 and Address 11.

Do you know if there has been or is any water ingress into the cabin? Wondering about water/damp around the roof electronics and behind the glovebox where the CAN gateway is. Would also check the boot area around and above the battery.

Unfortunately there's nothing I can spot either from this or the previous scans that can pinpoint what the root cause is here.

No obvious water ingress, I did check quite extensively whilst waiting for parts fitting the air compressor, I checked all drain holes etc, even with the rain we've been having, no damp carpets....

Good point on the voltages, I will check more thoroughly with voltages at the fuses, and I've also been advised to check J644 - Energy management control unit.

Something was nagging me about the 'over voltage' errors and how all this started, so reread your first post. In addition to checking the J644/BEM module, it might be worth using VCDS to check the output from the alternator. Having said that, apparently with the D3, the BEM can control the output from the alternator, depending on load, so it may well be the BEM.

I did some searching and couldn't find anything about voltage spikes in the D3, but came across one for the D2 where they said a voltage spike threw the transmission into limp mode. Just wondering if that was the 'jerked/jumped' situation you experienced. Hi All,

Quick update, we took out the battery, cleaned all of the connections and applied terminal grease to the connections as some were dirty, put everything back and made sure everything was tight and the issue appears to have gone away, I'm yet to do a long 1hr plus trip, but it seems to have fixed the issue!

Do I risk hijacking this thread? Definitely quailfies for strange electrical issues!

Looking through the first scan above I saw a lot of errors the same as what I'm getting with my scan today, with modules I've never had issue with. The scan stemmed from me coming out this morning and the car appearing dead as a dodo and not responding to the remote whatsoever. I didn't have time to investigate further but when I got home later I tried my other remote with the same result. I thought I'd maybe left the car unlocked overnight and the battery was flat but on testing it was 12.4 volts so I used the key to open the driver door and as I turned the key I immediately saw the handle light illuminate so all in order there. I sat into the car with the key and it started on the button without issue. I subsequently got out of the car and locked it successfully with the remote. I did a scan which I didn't save where about 90% of the modules were throwing errors mostly voltage issues with the wiping motor, horn and parking brake standing out to me for some reason. I thought maybe I had gotten water into the CCM or something with all the recent heavy rain, and subsequently I'm getting intermittent key not recognised errors only to work 5 minutes later, so there's definitely something amiss. I've cleared the DTCs and going for a drive and seeing what I have when I return.

Had a few more instances of the key fob not being detected when locking/unlocking the car and several scans similar to the below errors but with a Navigation defective media error also. I removed the disc and it read OK in my PC but haven't put it back in before doing the scan below. I've only listed the modules with errors and the only non-usual errors listed are Parking Brake and Alarm Horn. I haven't done a physical investigation yet but the rear discs and pads were only done 7k miles ago. The horn error has me baffled also, as car has no problem chirping when locking. Can someone tell me or point me to a photo of where the drain holes are in the plenum area under the scuttle panel?

012597 - The following post seems to imply that it's related to wear and tear with the stepper motors, but they also mention how they cleared it (at least on a temporary basis): https://forums.ross-tech.com/index.php?threads/12151/

00065/00066 - Common fault. The 'heaters' are nothing more than a bank of transistors attached to a bank of heatsinks and encased in an epoxy, and they burn out after time. This is what they look like inside:



01134 - Tends to mean that the battery inside the unit is starting to corrode, and you'll eventually be getting the alarm going off by itself for no apparent reason. If you don't already know, the alarm is situated in the plenum chamber on the passenger side, in the very far corner.

02596 - Never experienced this, but since the pads are reasonably new, then the likely cause is the adaptation was either never done or the wrong value entered when the pads were fitted.
