Default Coolant Temp Sensor

A bit worried when my engine management light came on, plugged in the VAG COM and it says Coolant Temp Sensor and both lambda sensors are playing up. Called Ben and he says they are related, so hopefully after I replace the coolant temp sensor (or dual temp sender) the Lambadas will be okay. Just picked one up from Audi now £29.99, luckily they keep them in stock. Anyone any ideas where the old one is located?

Yeah, I've changed this on a 99 S8 a few weeks ago, also making photos of this.
I have them on my home PC, so stand by

Cya, Chris.

Default Self Study Guide?

Do Audi publish a Self Study Guide for the A8 and S8, which gives basic schematics of the engine layout and location of the various sensors?

(as they do for the S4, RS4, and RS6)

Clive, don't you trust in the forum ?

Sure, there is a solution, but only for the VAG garages themselves.
The program is called ELSA Win, but it's forbidden to show to costumers and also to use it as a private worker.
But anyway 50% of interested Audidrivers have it

Here are some pics.

It's located right there under the cover (couldn't find a matching pic, so I had to take an internet pic)

If you remove the air intake tube you can see the sensor.
You will have to remove a plastic clip which is shoved in. (not on the pic)

This is the part seperated.

The sensor is only plugged in, so you can pull it apart.
You will find there a small amount of cooling water, which needs to be cold, so you can work properly. So let your engine cool down some hours.

Greetz and good luck,

Chris.

Yes, of course! was just hoping there might be a similar publication that we could refer to.

Anyway, excellent write-up and what are those thingies going into each bank of your engine...??

Hi, just replaced mine on a 96 3.7 it's located on the drivers side cylinder head at the back if you remove the plastic air intake pipe from air box to throttle housing you can just see it, good tip make sure engine is cold and release the pressure in the cooling system before changing if you're quick you won't lose to much coolant. Also while you are there check for any oil leaks from the 2 blanking plates on the back of the head the seals go hard and leak, dripping oil onto the exhaust front pipe. The seals are cheap only a couple of quid from the dealer. And also check the breather pipe from the centre v of the engine to the rubber connecting piece on the throttle body this perishes and causes all sorts of engine running problems, been there, done that and got the t shirt. Hope this helps
