Default D2 s8 has the lurgy :(

So my S8 isn’t too well….

Few weeks back, I gave the car a motorway blast and it threw a bit of a fit with what sounded like a wheel/tyre was about to go… I’m on this stretch regularly and know th3 road surface doesn’t generally cause this but on the same token I’ve not usually got the s8 giving it as big licks…….

Anyway after my reducing speed and a relatively short distance the noise abated and all felt normal again.

Went today to give her a clean and a trip to waxstock, battery had died, boosted from my battery pack and got an instant abs and stability warning. Also noticed some smoke/steam from drivers side front wheel arch while idling. Lifting bonnet I could see more from in the engine bay seemingly from under the engine cover (both sides)…

No obvious loss of any fluids etc but any thoughts on what could be wrong and how best to tackle it?

Got a vid and will try uploading but will need to edit size….

Could be oil leaks or something like that but first thing I'd check is the battery connection under the drivers side front wheel arch. Make sure nothing is shorting out.

Whilst in the drivers wheel arch, check to see if there is any other damage, like to the ABS/brake pad sensor wires. Is it possible that you ran over a bit of debris on the road and it came up and damaged something. Is there any smell from the steam/smoke, to give any indication of what it could be?

Did you remove the engine covers prior to filming it, as that might help isolate the location it's coming from. With the covers on, the steam/smoke may just be getting dissipated across the engine, so making it more awkward to find the issue, unless it's glaringly obvious.

Agreed. A good inspection required.
Check your alternator drive belt also...
Have you an alternator bearing failing?

Not saying this isn't an option, but I just replaced my alternator as the rear bearing on it had essentially gone completely. Sounded terrible, and I eventually got around to it after about 2-3 months of the noise, but never had any charging issues. Although it's my daily driver, it would be unusual for me to drive it more than twice a week.

Thanks fellas, just back from some r&r in Scotland, will have a better look at weekend n check these out (didn’t have cover off, didn’t really smell or hear anything). Only recent thing was a ropey higher speed journey, where things went a little **** up as mentioned above but that seemed to sort itself out again
