WITW - The PF Exxon Valdez!
I bought another one Yes, thats nine. No I don't have a problem hush now
(actually I have a serious storage problem so I need to sell some stuff) Its a 1998 PF, which is actually the first PF I've owned. I don't even get them in the workshop much. It was registered to VAG UK for its first year so I think it may have been a demo or press car, and as such it has many toys including blinds, auto mirrors, alcantara seats, satnav, ski bag, solar roof, rear parking sensors, and headlight washers. Its been with the same owner for the last 10 years or so and done very little mileage in that time. He bailed on it when the steering rack sprung a leak, and I couldn't let it go for scrap so I jumped on it. Its getting the treatment over the next couple of weeks and I'm hoping to have it for sale at AITP - no pressure then! Some interior pics - it is a really lovely place to sit, and I am rather fond of it already. Walnut wood which is a bit average, but I have some myrtle on the way Black headlining The rear blind actually works! Ski bag Complete first aid kit! It has the threaded inserts in the floor for the tunnel brace, but for some reason just plugged up. Not sure if this is factory or someone has removed it? It'll get one fitted anyway. Power steering oil everywhere Its had a gearbox rebuild within the last 10K, and for some reason they seem to have sandblasted the whole gearbox, so the sump is in a right state. I'll get this blasted and powdercoated. At some point, presumably when the gearbox was removed, the boss for the heat shield and exhaust hanger was broken off Not sure how I'll fix this - I may need to swap the rear casing, or it might be possible to weld it in place So much leaking oil even BP is considering an apology More leaks and more The undertray hangers are rather smooshed Oh, more oil The usual detritus Its not terrible on top but it has been sprayed with the crappy lacquer that car dealers used to use to make engine bays shiny for the hour the punter was looking at the car The nasty crap has gone yellow and ruined pretty much everything it touched More oil leaks! Five original Avus 1 wheels with centre caps These were actually the reason I bought the car since they are so rare. Even if the car turned out to be a lemon, it was worth buying just for the wheels. These are in for refurb while its on the lift |

Nice save! I really like those Avus wheels! I would love to have a set of those wheels for myself. Oh nice alcantara sport seats, I wish my car have the alcantara.

What a beauty that is
I’d love a PF in black with that spec. Excellent purchase

Not sure at all! I fear I have may have bonded with it because its a lovely place to sit
I have come to the realisation that sitting in them is the critical first impression for me. If it is immediately cosseting and cosy like a D2 should be, I feel good about the car and have a tendency to keep it. If its stinky and minging and I have to put a lot of hours in to make it nice, I don't develop an attachment to it, hence why I almost scrapped the murple. However, I can't keep this one. I have too many already and I have no need for it, no matter how nice it is |

Question for those more knowledgeable than me on the PF: is the inlet manifold different between A8 (AEW / ABZ) and S8 (AHC)?
Etka isn't very clear as it calls it 'suction pipe with elbow' The AHC has a different suffix, but the same throttle body... Of course none of the number match anything on the actual manifold! Last edited by MikkiJayne; 26th July 2021 at 04:05 PM. |

Cats, but yes
200 is probably about right for this one since its in pretty nice condition apart from the leaks and the horrid car dealer lacquer, and it has all come apart reasonably well. I started taking it apart in the middle of last week. First job - disconnect the steering column from the rack before it goes on the lift Once it was on the lift I moved on to removing the suspension and discovered the brake pad warning cables have been cut and bypassed The pinch bolts and tie rods came out without a fight, which was nice Saturday now. Engine removal, starting from underneath. I mentioned that the heat shield bolt on the driver's side was snapped off - the passenger side bolt has been gorilla'd as well and I can't get it off. The heat shield was already broken on one side so I just snapped it off. More on this mess later. The power steering fluid is pretty grim, which is weird considering how much it was leaking. I'd put half a litre in it just moving it around the place. This will all get cleaned and replaced though. Front panel off. Its filthy in here. The stubborn-pulley-getter-offer tool Ta dah! Magnets on the fuel lines Ohhh dear.... Ready to come out Coming out Out The grottiest engine bay I've encountered so far I think Drivetrain on the pallet truck ready for disassembly When the gearbox was done the cam position sensor was refitted with the cable sitting on the exhaust manifold instead of behind the heat shield! How it was still running is a mystery. I don't have mounting brackets to fit the 32V for the splitting machine so I just supported the engine with the crane and rolled the gearbox off the back of it Home-made crank locking tool I loosened the crank pulley bolt before putting it on the stand, since these things are so tight that with the engine on the stand I can't put enough torque on it to loosen the bolt without the stand falling over! Separated Engine on the stand ready for stripping and cleaning |

I'm guessing the break pad sensor threw up a implausible signal fault and so they by-passed it?
