Default Air Con noise

Help!

I have a very similar noise to this in my Audi TTS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ym7HR6rC6Cw&t=64s

It’s only there with the air con turned on and, like in the video, it disappears when then the air con is turned off.

It seems to be coming from around the heater fan area (not under the bonnet), but the heater fan is new and you can wind that up to full with no noise (until you push the air con button!).

I’ve got the fan out, but no obviuos issues, and the noise is still there with the fan removed (but still plugged in, as the air con doesn’t work with the fan off or disconnected).

Any ideas?

I had a similar noise issue but was convinced it was a whine coming from the torque converter. After only managing to top up about 125mls gearbox fluid I found the noise was still present. Turning the AC to ECON the noise went away. Transpires that although the noise was more distinguishable in the cabin it was the AC compressor (low on coolant). AC guy did say though it's probably time to plan for a new compressor as the bearings could also be on thier way out.

These cars never stay fixed

Thanks Paul. Topping up the air con coolant was going to be my next attempt at a fix as I’ve checked the filter and all the air vents.
