Oh that’s very kind thanks. I’m not near the car for a bit, but I’ll drop a message and see we can work something out if I don’t get anywhere.. Might finally have found someone who’ll look at it / recover it after a lot of trying.

Seems no one wants any work that isn’t routine servicing these days.

If this comes off, could you let me know who you've found please?

The problem for most garages is the car taking up ramp space for days at a time, that costs money

Oh thanks! maybe I'll take you up on that in the future. Nice to know there are some A8 guys close at hand!

Happy to report the old thing is up and working again.

Turns out it was a crankshaft position sensor (so wrong thread location I guess!) but was a real pain getting it to somewhere who'd take a non runner. Not sure that explains everything but 750 odd miles later there haven't been any issues.

Now MOT'd relatively cleanly (couple of minor leaks noted) and confidence being restored.

Thanks to all who offered advice and assistance.

Who did you find to look at it please?

I'm heading all the way over to garage near Worcester tomorrow in the hope this one will prove decent

Sorry for the slow reply - busy week.

It was Vastech in Warwick (not Rugby) who did the work.

Tbh I had heard a few mixed things from a people locally, but after ringing pretty much everyone they were the only people who'd take it in anytime soon.

Can't really fault them, car was MOT'd on a saturday, they'd run the car and started repeatedly, used on a long test drive, replaced a hazard relay without asking / charging so was pretty happy.

oh dear

Would not touch them with a bargepole, sorry, they were largely responsible for the demise of the gearbox of my previous A8 back in 2011, albeit I could not prove it at the time - the gearbox failed within 100 miles of them servicing it.

Will never go backthere, and would very much recommend others stay away

Is this Vasstech, Rugby or Vastech, Warwick?! confusingly similarly named but different garages.

The latter did the last work on my D2 but I have been to the former in the past as it's very near my parents.

Tbh I was just pleased that someone would take my then non-running car but good to know which local garages are worth using.

I've had Stealth Racing, Southam, VRS, Northants and Volks Service Repair in Coventry recommended in the past but have never used them.

Get the impression anyone with decent knowledge of older cars is hard to find.

It was Vasstech Rugby, back in 2011

I just checked each company, seems my assumption they are the same people was wrong, looks to be totally different company and directors, so I take it back, other than to reaffirm Vasstech Rugby should be avoided IMO

Apologies to Vastec Warwick!
