Singhs RNS-E Install

Just ordered mine, an A6 unit from Lithuania. V. excited.

Singh 5th March 2010 07:35 PM

I was about to order this adaptor from Kufatec, but it doesn't list the D2. Which model did you select Ian?

http://www.kufatec.de/shop/product_i...nlock-key.html

Another question (sorry) If I order this http://www.kufatec.de/shop/product_i...-to-RNS-E.html Does that mean that the RNS E will use my existing GPS aerial so I could in theory just chuck the free one they supply with the RNS E away..?

Thanks

1) - I selected the 4B A6, with phone, with CD changer, with Bose, no small BNS navi, and RNS-D as existing radio/nav... Thats what I ordered, I still dont guarantee it will work yet +++

2) Yes, that will plug the RNS-D type sat nav aerial straight into the back of the RNS-E, so you wont need the aerial that they supply...

To be honest, I was bored at work so thought I would make an offer and it was accepted. I've already paid my insurance for the year and being young my only monthly outgoing is my phone bill. Working most the time as taken a sort of gap year from education and delayed uni etc.. till September. RNS E has been on the list a long time, still got solar/dark wood/rear seat heating to fit yet then I will be happy. Anyway... Its coming on Tuesday. I ended up paying £150 more for an A6 unit over an A4 one, I don't want gaps either

Another quick queston, I don't currently have a phone in my car but will be adding bluetooth, do I need to choose the phone option when I am ordering the adaptor. I would think not but just want to make sure. +++

A quick, and very productive half hour this morning:

Firstly, a quick shot of RNS-D and RNS-E side by side. Notice the taper on the sides is bigger on the A6 RNS-E than the A8 RNS-D - This is good, no gaps. The top edge between the screen and top is almost identical too. Notice also the more matt effect on the RNS-E that comes on the later Audi models. Its one of the few downsides of this upgrade that it wont quite match the climate as well....

Here is a side on view. Notice that the RNS-E comes with these lugs on the side, now call me chicken, but because I dont know 100% that this RNS-E is going to work/fit, I'm not willing to snap them off just yet, which is what most folks do.....

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1267445781

And here is a rear shot to complete - Notice that not 1 single connector is directly transferrable! - Eveything changes......

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1267445781

My solution to the side lug problem - A hack saw:

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1267445781

and it works beautifully, the RNS-E drops in nicely....

And in goes the climate module. Arrows show the discrepancy between the A8 taper and the A6 taper, not a great deal in it. From memory, the A4 units have a more narrow front so the overlap is the other way. You can see the different in plastics now too....

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1267445816

but all is forgiven, look how fabulous that is

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1267445816

..... And the front cover has popped on without trimming the sides off, which means I can test to my hearts content and consider never trimming the sides off by the looks of it... The slight gap between the climate module and the unit is because I have no screws in the climate module - that will nip up perfectly me thinks... Cool, what a result.... +++

Look what arrived today!

And seeing as Ian's worked and fit fine the first thing I did was snap the side lugs off, I couldn't find my hacksaw
I tried a test fit, can't install yet as I'm still waiting on adaptors from kufatec but the two sides are a little to wide for it to just slot right in, which leaves a tiny bit of the RNS E sticking out. Close, but not quite. My question is, if I take the wood trim of the centra fascia, pop the RNS E in will the wood just slot on over it?
Also, how do I get a power source to it to test it? I don't have my adaptors from kufatec yet and dying to power it on. Which connector is for power? I noticed Ian had it working out the car, in his home? Thanks :D

(I created your own thread so as not to confuse mine for anyone that is trying to follow it step by step)

In answer to your question re power, I dont know very easily....

I had it rigged up in the house off a 12V supply, but I was using a normal ISO connection into my Kufantec adapter, which then went into the RNS-E. I didnt pay any real attention to which pin it was, and the adapter is now in the car, which is outside, and its cold, and late. Sorry :)

Cool, thanks for my own thread, sorry for taking yours over. I was contemplating starting it myself but wasn't sure.
I will have to keep this updated now! About the fitment, if I remove the middle wood section and put the RNS E in, will the wood trim fit over it? As when I tried putting the RNS E in I found out the edges are a little are too wide, if not then I will have to sand them down?

Singh 10th March 2010 04:19 PM

To answer my above question with a quick test fit, it seems the sides need a little sanding down as the wood otherwise doesn't sit flush. Here's some pics from my test install.

BTW, my god I cannot tell you how I detest my wood trim. I'm only really fully happy with the car at night when I can't see it. Just need the company doing my piano set to hurry up!

IT 10th March 2010 05:33 PM

Hmmm. Interesting. It will be interesting to see if mine fits on still when its all bolted up, I guess it wont if yours doesnt....

Never mind, a little trim it will have to be then... :D
