For the small additional cost I would definitely get one of the later units with chrome power button - it doesn't then limit you to 4GB SD cards, which are a nightmare to get hold of now (most cheap 4GB SD cards are actually DSHC, just not marked as such, and don't work in the original RNS-E!)

You can also add an AMI interface (Notorious has one mounted in the cubby to the right of the steering column, which acts as a useful place to plug your phone in for charging/music) and I would definitely spec the bluetooth module for the OEM integration (doesn't do bluetooth streaming, unless the specs have changed with newer modules, which they might have)

I never found the lack of directions in the DIS bothered me that much, but maybe the member on here who has figured out CAN messages on the D3 instrument cluster could figure out why it doesn't work and knock up a suitable device to convert the signal?

I'm guessing you mean the RNS-E 2010?

Features of RNS-E
This device offered a wide range of navigation, convenience and entertainment features.

6.5-inch 16:9 ratio color LCD screen with 400x240 resolution
FM/AM radio
2 SD card slots for MP3 storage (up to 4GB each) located behind the LCD screen
DVD-based GPS navigation with traffic message channel support
Route guidance shown on DIS display
Multifunction steering wheel support
Controls and user interface very similar to Multi Media Interface
Rear view camera and parking sensors display (option)
Bluetooth handsfree system (option)
TV tuner (option)
Audio aux-in (option)
Satellite radio (option)
CD changer (option)
Audi Music Interface (option)
Firmware updates available through update CD or with maps DVD
User interface languages: English, German, Dutch, Italian, French, Spanish (other languages available with 3rd party updates)

Features of RNS-E 2010
Higher resolution LCD screen (800x480)
Support for SDHC memory cards
Chrome control knobs instead of plastic ones
MEDIA button instead of CD/TV or CD/SD

It would be a big shame if streaming couldn't be achieved as I am a Spotify man and currently enjoy BT streaming to my Dension. That's an option I'd have to explore.

I didn't know what an AMI was so Googled it and found this:
https://www.audi.co.uk/glossary/a/au...interface.html
I guess this is what you mean. It does suggest the possibility of wireless music playback so perhaps some hope there.

I've been around the same loop more than once and have finally settled on staying OEM with my RNS-D.

Everyone is different, but in the end (for me) changing a mid-1990s system for an early 2000s system didn't really seem to be a priority. I have the car, and enjoy it immensely, for other reasons.

And with the various add-ons I've integrated (Xcarlink, DVB-T tuner and reversing camera) it does everything I need it to anyway.

There's something about the RNS-D that doesn't float my boat and I think it's that square screen that makes it look so dated.
I had an RNS-D in my blue A8. I bought Big Red and prefered the look of the Symphony II over the RNS-D so when it came to hand over the blue car to MJ, I decided that the RNS-D was one of the things that I didn't want transplanting to Big Red.
But now the S8 has the RNS-D (and that awful, IMHO, 90's square screen) I'm keen to change for something that I prefer the look of.
Dropping a Symphony II in the S8 would do the trick but I would just feel stupid doing that, whereas the RNS-E would be a better choice.
After seeing pictures of various RNS-E installations in D2's I think that they don't look out of place whilst also bringing the cabin a little more up to date.
Bluetooth built-in
HiRes screen
16:9 screen to match modern day broadcasts and 16:9 rear camera views
SD card support
Phonebook support
Up-to-date Satnav with TMC (I mean you've gotta love that alone so that you're not having to stick your phone/Google Maps on a phone cradle).

Different tastes I suppose +++
I also think that it's not a priority but it is a nice-to-have:)

Mind you, I haven't seen the costs yet. I may well backtrack and share your very views when I see how much it will set me back

I'd question that for starters.
My RNS-D has TMC by the way (and it really works!).... ;)

Well, I'm crossing my fingers that you manage to have yours all fitted for the meet so that I can have a good look and play to see how well it integrates.
Are you planning on a reverse camera in yours as well?

If its done for the meet it will likely be just nav and music, possibly Bluetooth if I have time to pull the gubbins from an A4 donor I have. In time I may add MFSW, reverse camera, AMI, etc.

Adrian E 20th May 2018 07:56 AM

Sergey's car has the works already fitted, so if you want to see the art of the possible have a look at his 3.7 at the meet +++

I do indeed mean the 2010 on RNS-E - 'my' old S8 had the older version and I was lucky enough to acquire a good selection of 4GB SD cards when they were relatively easy to obtain.

If I'd kept the car I intended to update it to the Mk2 unit and add AMI (which allows you to plug a phone in and stream content that way, not over bluetooth)

You can go aftermarket for bluetooth, which then allows streaming, but the kit isn't cheap at all

Thanks for this - I hadn't realised the early units had this limitation. Having just spent a while searching ebay for non-HC 4GB SD cards and found none at all, this A3 unit I have here is rendered pretty much useless so we'll have to look at Sergey's at the meet instead. I'm going to put my JVC back in

Adrian E 20th May 2018 10:03 PM

They do exist still - worth a question to this lot:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Memory-Cano...in%3A411643031

I'll check what I've got left - I know I gave some to the new owner of my S8 but may have a couple lurking.....

ETA - this is the seller who was able to put together RNS-E units to your specs, so mixing Mk1 A6 C5 fascia with later unit, making the firmware work (later nav never installed in C5 which is coding to use in S8) etc

https://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/sat_nav_deals

Not listing anything at the moment, but has recent selling history.....

I'm not sure that Sergey is coming to the annual meet this year?
He might be coming to Germany possibly.

I think I'm right in saying that the colour of the plastic on the RNSe isn't an exact match to the ventilation controls next to it below. Unless of course you prise the only known perfectly matching ventilation controls from my cold dead fingers or make me an outrageously good offer!! :D

Adrian E 21st May 2018 07:22 AM

I never found the difference noticeable enough to worry about - after all the matching wood trims on doors and dash are nowhere near the same finish!

I think Kiwi shoe polish or similar does the job to darken it but prob best done with trim off the unit!

Another thing to add - early units will most likely have weak lasers so will only work with OEM discs. I’ve posted how to change the nav transport before - not difficult and will then continue working with copy discs

So how come you've got the only matching set of dash trims known?
And why do you have them? What's the back story?
I can't recall seeing an RNS-E in your 3.7?
