From various bits of info and your screen scan, I've now worked out that there were two different 2G MMI Bose amps in A8s. One was installed from 2002 until 2005 and a different one from 2006 until 2008 when the 3G MMI cars were built. You have one of the 2006-2008 amps. It would seem that Bose in the 2006-2008 cars was rare as that was when the B&O amp became available. I believe only 2002-2005 Bose amps sometimes went into CP! Your phone scan shows you have the original 'SIM in the arm' phone. Your firmware version 0770 is the latest and won't change at 5570. You also don't need to run CD2, the Bluetooth update CD. If you run CD3 it will only take 10-15 mins. Julian

An inconclusive conclusion! ...
As I originally posed the "let's get to the bottom of this" question, after almost four months with no extra info. coming to light, I thought I try and draw some conclusions for those who read this thread later and who try and make sense of it and why it didn't have an answer until now!
In practice, without extensive knowledge of all the cars and their MMI update history [only Audi know that], it's been impossible to draw conclusions. However some basic guesses on my behalf: a) It only seems to be the Bose Amp that can cause CP problems after an MMI update. b) The situation is confused by the fact there are two versions of the Bose amp for D3 cars which may be adding to the confusion of "I did/I didn't have a problem when I updated". Early cars, like mine, had part number 4E0 035 223A; later cars had 4E0 035 223G. c) The 'from' and 'to' MMI levels may have a significance - mine went into CP going from 0890 to 5150. But Ray indicated above that he didn't have a problem with the same HW version of the Bose amp. One answer for this, Ray, may be that your car DID have a CP problem earlier that was fixed by the time you did your subsequent update. For all the effort, that's all that's come out of this attempt to resolve this question but hopefully someone will get some benefit as I notice that assistance for 'old' A8 2G D3s are still referenced on this forum with pre 5570 code. Julian

Thanks Julian.
This has been a very interesting thread. I was a very green newbie to the 8 when I did my updates and seriously knew nothing. (I sometimes wonder how come I ever knew less than the little bit I know now). I ran all three discs twice, CD1 twice then CD2 twice and finally CD3 twice. As I remember it CD2 did not do anything whilst the other two worked on the first pass then nothing on the second. I feel a bit stupid now 'cos I gave the CD set away at last years Annual Meet thinking I had finished with it, but I plan on fitting the Bluetooth module sometime and so will need CD2 again (I think). You could be correct in your suggestion that maybe CP had been removed prior to my ownership. There are no mentions of this in the paper history that i received with this wonderful vehicle. What I fail to understand (bless me) if CP was removed before I ran the update CDs why did it not come back with the update like with others? Sorry Julian, my pedantic old brain being too nosey. Anyone else reading this thread, remember the warning about battery level. Either use a charger or have the engine running.

CDs - as I learnt myself with my 'armrest' phone ECU which gave up after I'd had the car 7 years, you might need the update CDs again if you have to replace an ECU and it isn't up-to-date! [I was lucky; my replacement phone ECU was at the latest version and didn't need the CDs anyway]. But I've kept my CD set for that reason. FYI; the BT ECU 'final version' was 1130. If you go BT, try and get an ECU already at that version. Although, sadly, no-one breaking A8s realises how important the installed firmware version is before they remove it from the car. [ They don't realise the SW code on the ECU label is the level that was installed when new]. CP - I suspect the original Bose Amps had a bug that caused the first MMI update performed to cause it to go into CP. Once fixed, subsequent updates were OK. Julian

Final Summary ...
This info. relates to A8s using European 2G systems, the final version of which was 5570 - dated October 2008.
1) No-one has indicated that anything other than Bose Amps go in to Permanent CP by doing an MMI upgrade using CDs. This makes the sound system go 'left side only' and needs an Audi dealer [or approved alternative] to fix it. 2) Only Bose amps fitted to MY2003, MY2004 & MY2005 cars seem to be prone to the 'fault'. These units are labelled [and recognised by MMI Red screen and VCDS] as HW 4E0 035 223A and may have various Hxx levels between 9 and 14. [MY2006 cars onwards have a later ECU marked/identified as HW 4E0 035 223G]. 3) It's possible that 'Permanent CP' only happens when running MMI updates to level 5150 on 'early' cars that are running MMI levels before 1110. Note: there is 'Internet Fact' that you have to go to 1110 first. This is not true as I personally went from 0890 to 5150 in one go. Julian
