that can't be right, that's over 28mpg, based on you filling about 80 litres (I'm assuming you fill up before you run out!)

1. Is there that much difference in the asking price of a decent D2 A8 and S8?
2. Difference in running/maintenance cost (including insurance etc)
3. Difference in the pure driving experience?
1.Yes up to 60% currently. When I were buying mine 4 years ago there was even more difference. Back then you could get 94-95 A8 for £1500, 97-98 £2500 but it was really hard to find decent S8(97+) for under £5000. I ended up with Cat B writeoff 1997 S8 for £2.5k

2.S8 needs more fuel( I am doing 16-19mpg in mostly short runs), insurance is probably bit more expensive on S, how much depends on your personal circumstances. Otherwise costs should be similar.

3. I have not had much driving in other 8's apart from friends1997 3.7 FWD. They are quite different cars, depends on what you want.

PF = Pre facelift
FL = Facelift.

Easiest way to tell externally is to look at the back / front bumpers, facelift cars have a chrome strip that runs around the back bumper, and under the headlights at the front.
More subtle, the prefacelift has smaller door handles on all four doors with a key hole on the passenger side, the facelift has longer door handles and no key on the passenger side.

Internally, the facelift has different design switches in the centre console and different design armrests.

From the outside the FL has more chrome, especially under the headlights (see the picture at the top of the forum) and fogs in the lower bumper, plus more curved/flush door handles.
Wheels will also probably be different; S8 PF should have 6-spoke 18" original "straight-arm" Avus wheels with the simple "four rings" domed centre cap, whereas the FL has the "splayed-end" arm design that at a glance might look the same but also has a multicolour concentric-ring dished centre-cap with smaller Audi logo.

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions and extended leather. Ski hatch retrofit. Aftermarket reversing camera. DVB-T and XCarlink now removed as redundant.
2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

That's with my tank filled till the automatic fuel cut-off on the nozzle operates. I zero my trip each time I fill up.

It is 90 litres though, isn't it? Which would bring that 28 MPG down 3-4? Which sounds about right...?

Amar, it might be a 90 litre tank, but you almost certainly don't use the whole 90 litres each tank, unless you've got balls of steel and drive another 30 miles when the gauge says you're running on fumes.

Nollywood, how many litres do you usually need brim to brim?
