Default Whats the true fuigures on LPG please?

Still here, tryingh to either empty the knowledge banks or out stay my welcome...

Could those with / who have had an a8 on lpg please share their thoughts and experiences? In particular, what is the comparable mpg running LPG on a v8? Servicing costs on LPG? Any running issues or issues to be aware of with the a8??

Sorry for all the . Just seems silly not to ask the people in the know!

Expect MPG to drop around 10% on LPG. Performance and how seamless it is depends on the quality of the system. BRC and Prins are both excellent.

Then, its mostly down to how well its fitted. Where is the filling location, the tank, the ECU & how tidy is it under the bonnet. Can the engine still easily be serviced with the kit fitted, or did they just slap it in regardless, for example.

Not sure where you are in the country, but my S8 with LPG on it will be ready late on Saturday - It needs 2 minor items to pass its MOT and Im away now till Sat am - You're welcome to come and have a ride in that, and the A8 side by side for comparison....

I have an early Stag 300 on mine and my overall consumption tank to tank is 21 mpg. Lots of mixed driving so I think representative of what is realistic.

The earlier system requires the occasional tweak but anybody with the diagnostic cable and some PC skills can easily do this.

Father in law recently had his 4.2 converted with a later Stag system that self corrects and constantly monitors the fuelling. He's chuffed to bits with it and is getting an indicated 26 mpg, though on a run to Aberdeen (from north Wales) with the cruise set at just above 70 got on the ferry with an indicated 29.2.

Before you get excited LPG has a lower calorific value than petrol so an LPG system 'multiplies' the petrol ECU injected signals by a percentage so injects more gas for a given input.

You could probably take 10%-15% off of that but it is still good when you consider LPG (if you shop around) is just over half the price of pump fuel.

I tend to put £30 of petrol in mine a month and use the car daily (20k miles a year). The car starts on petrol when cold and switches over at a configured temp as the evaporator needs heat to vapourise the gas.

Both systems fitted by Profess in South Wales (previous owner did mine - I have no affiliation with them).

They do advertise they can do an install in a day and you'll find many people saying it can't be done. It can, but bear in mind a day is drop off at 8am (they give you a courtesy car - don't expect anything nice though) and they finished the father in laws at 11pm (couple of issues they had to address last off). They had up to 5 people on the car at once - that is how they manage to do it in that time.

The install is neat, I've seen some horribly engineered conversions. Andy, the owner, is a nice chap and will spend the time of day with you.

My car has a 95l torroidal tank (spare wheel well), FIL has a 100l tank just behind the rear seat. pros and cons of both installs but in all very happy with the running costs.

Happy to post pics of both if anybody is interested.

I have BRC on my 3.7 sport. running around its showing 23.4mpg next time we do a long run ile take note of mpg. The main Uk agent is in Bath. So i go to them for services. As if they dont have somthing, no one else will. Cost for service this yr was £185 all in.
Only downfall i/we find, if your planning long trip you need to go on some lpg sites to vheck where you can fill up on route. Regular runs you get to know where they are so no problems.

Sorry real tired tonight...
So, are we saying that 21mpg on gas (that is roughly half the cost of petrol) will "equate" to 42mpg in old money??

It doesn't quite work like that. I had a prinz system on my PF S8. I was doing 25k PA and kept meticulus records. It paid for itself in 11 months and I was getting physically 17MPG on LPG but with the cost saving that equated to 32MPG financially. I am not a conservertive driver although the vast majority of my miles were motorway.

You loose power on LPG for two reasons, the lower calorific value and the fact that it enters the cylinder as a gas, thereby displacing oxygen so the 'charge' is smaller. It has a higher octane than petrol so can run leaner. The future is LP(g)I Liquid Petroleum Injection, where the LPG is injected into the inlet tract as a liquid and phase changes in the cyclinder. Ford are running two Focus in the BTCC with some sucess I understand.

Default LPG on a Landcruiser

Hi,

As an (unhappy) outsider who has yet to find the right S8 I would like to tell you of my feelings about LPG as fitted to my 3.4 petrol Colorado.
I have run this car in Portugal for 6 years since I had a Prinz system fitted.
I had the system fitted as soon as I bought the car and obviously don't use petrol when I don't need to so will not get into the performance/consumption debate.I am the sort of driver who 'presses on' and adopts the attitude that if the car needs a drink it must have it and s*d the cost even though I am spending my own money. I am ashamed to say that being abroad the system had never had filters changed but worked fine until last month when returning to the UK I could not refill the tank. The original LPG installer fixed the input valve problem (not related to lack of service) and serviced the system which cost £300. I do a limited mileage of around 6,000/annum and reckon that I retrieved the installation costs at around 3 years.
When I get my S8 I shall fit a Prinz system even though I worry that the Govt. may decide to up the duty on LPG. However I hope that the minimal penetration of LPG into the market may persuade them that the tax take on an increase in price would not be worth the hassle with the 'green' lobby.
