So now I know it's an ECX and what I'm looking for (BL, optionally BM)
BL- with ESP
BM- without ESP

BL it is then.
But I'll try the alternative coding first.

1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.

Oh yes! Yes! Yes!
I like!

Just done it (changed 00101 to 00111) and been for a bit of a meander locally, maybe 20 minutes and no faster than 60.
Suddenly that feeling of "it needs to shift up a gear" has gone.
But it still drops a cog or 2 (or even 3 if you floor it) when you use the loud pedal.

In "pootle" mode revs barely creep over 2000 now and it goes into 5th at marginally over 40mph dropping to about 1500rpm.

If only I'd done this years ago, I would have saved a fair bit on petrol on non-motorway driving.

It feels just as driveable and urgent as ever.

Not sure what this would work like on a smaller engine, but on the original S8, which is pretty torquey at low revs anyway, it feels great.

I think I may try this mod as well, though mine does up shift into 5th at about 42mph, on the rare ocasion that I 'drive like a priest'.

I know that I have ESP and mine's an ECX (confirmed in service manual & build sticker)

This is quite important as I'm going to need to squeeze every mpg out of my S8, due to major domestic upheaval, and it now being my daily driver (for the while) until things in life once more regain a semblance of equillibrium

How are you finding it after a few days HP?

I've only done one more (not long) journey since the last post, so not much more to report really; it just feels "right for me" now, amd I'm not renowned for dawdling.

Previously mine would rarely go into 5th until at least 50 on "give and take" roads and I regularly used to switch into tip mode and force an upshift, which it would then drop out of PDQ given any feeble excuse.

The only change up that it still seems to "slightly" hang on for is 3rd to 4th, with the slightly strange result that when "gently" accelerating 4th gear is passed through surprisingly quickly. I can drive at a steady speed (or set cruise) of about 35mph and it stays in 3rd though I can push that to 4th with the tiptronic and it sticks there.
