Hi Pete,

I cant comment on your specific problem or if it is the same as this tread but I can point you in the right direction on this:

You need to read them either using a generic ODB-II code reader which will give you numerical fualt codes, which you can then search for information on.

Preferably use VCDS (aka VAGCOM) which gives a more descriptive output. It's not cheap to buy (ebay versions don't work very well!) but it works well, where are you located? Maybe someone nearby could help out or point you in the direction of a garage who could read the codes for you?

Im completly new to audi ownership and fault codes etc. How would I extract error codes from the ECU to confirm my problem?

Im going to change the fuel filter as per this thread. Is an Audi genuine filter a must or are the after market ones as good?

I had a peek under the bonnet today. I assume the diesel filter is the one on the drivers side of the engine bay underneith a piece of carpet, with what looks like 4 hoses are connected?

Stick with Audi filters, it saves a load of hassle in the long run.

Not sure on your engine where the filter is but once you have the new one you can compare, but it does sound like you are looking at the correct part

You will need to fill the new filter with fresh diesel before fitting the pipes, this makes for easier starting and prevents running the battery flat trying to pump the fuel up to the engine.

VCDS aka Vag-Com is best for reading and clearing codes, costs around £270 and you require a laptop but if you are keeping the car then it makes sense to invest in one

Thank you all for you advice.

I am Nr Orpington in Kent.

I have ordered a filter from Southern Motor Factors. Its an original for £36. I need a filter anyway so I figure why not start here.

If this doesnt work then I need to get the fault code out of the car.

I have the car fir a year now, so I was thinking of getting another A8 but maybe the 4.2 Diesel this time. Are the VCDS aka Vag-Com the same for both these models. I wouldnt want to spend now only to find it wont work on the next car?

Thanks for the tip on priming the filter. Thank you.

VCDS and Vag-Com is the same thing and will work on most if not all Audi/Volkswagen.

There is plenty on here with inside knowledge of VCDS/Vag-comm who will be able to help you in choosing the correct product

What you've missed is that I started the thread originally. My fault was fixed by the fuel filter replacement. This thread has been bumped by a fellow user having similar issues, unfortunately replacing the fuel filter hasn't worked for him.
