Default Decisions

It seems like I have some hard decisions to make...

My poor pf S8 has decided to start laying down more oil than the Exxon Valdiz, yes - its the dreaded seal between the block and the oil cooler/ filter housing.
The parts aren't the issue at just over £12 (+ fluids & oil filter), its the labour, just had a very disappointing call from the dealer, who having got the job time and details e-mailed from Germany put the figure as around the £850 mark....

So what do I do

I'm of the mind to think that my 5 year 'affair' with the S8 has to come to an end, as despite being a reasonable mechanic, my disability seriously curtails my chances of a DIY solution.

Logically, I need a smaller vehicle anyway as a partially disabled mature student - currently on a tight budget..... I'd like to stick with Audi, maybe an A4 or an A2, as I need plenty of headroom being quite a tall guy...
I may even consider having my first 'soot chucker' in 35 years of car ownership (oh the humiliation)

Budget wise, it'd be the S8 + about £1k

We buy any car offers just over £1k with faults declared

A truly sad day, as I love my '8' ...... your thoughts peeps?

Richard....

Hi Richard
sorry to hear you have issues - have you tried finding a local mechanic who would attempt it for less? seems a shame to end the relationship with that car because of the local Audi dealer's price!

My thoughts, too. Find a good independent garage and ask them for a quote.

Ditto

If you buy a runaround for £2k, do you really think it's gonna be problem free? Pretty much any car on the market for that money is on the market in the first place because it has issues

Didn't have the heart to 'kill' the '8'

I've booked it in for repair at a local independent......

Now to source some sensibly priced top back arms for the front.....

For arms do a search for Meyle on here and you'll find links to places to order. They seem a good blend of quality and price. I would strongly recommend getting the full set of 4 as the other 2 are bound to go fairly soon and the labour difference will be minimal to fit them as all the same bolts need to come out and you'll need an alignment check after fitting any new arms

Thanks for the advice people

I've also decided to put my '8' in for the 'gearbox service' at the main dealer, as there's a service recall to be performed upon the car (gearbox selector/ ignition?, I think) and they're only charging £160 inclusive for the whole job including all parts and fluids. As the gearbox is still good, I might as well keep it that way, shame about a couple of blemishes on the paintwork though.... (Guy & Neil know what I mean in the case of my faithful steed)

Whilst in truth I can't really afford to run my S8 any more, I could not find any suitable replacements at sensible money either (mainly way overpriced rubbish), so better the devil I know I guess
