Default WANTED: Dimming drivers door mirror glass

My glass has become bronzed and looks like it's lost some kind of fluid from inside between the glass and the reflective coating, it now looks only three quarters full, strange eh!

Can it be fixed maybe?

Mine did that - no it has broken down functionality wise and needs replacing - contact A8 parts and join the waiting list for some second hand ones (mine took nearly 2 years of waiting lol) or bite the bullet and order new from Audi - GULP!

Same thing with my D3, with both mirrors. Lucked upon a pair of later genuine dimming mirrors on ebay and snapped them up.

They are pretty rare, because eventually they all seem to fail, the later ones do not have the chemical inside from what I can see however I think they are D3 only.

Later ones on our S5 are a completely different design too - think they must work on a different principle and don't have the fluid to break down as I'm sure they're cheaper too....

Funny thing is it still functions apart from the top part, would love to know what's going on inside ☺

The rubber seal around the glass has failed, and the fluid inside has started to leak out. The dimming works by passing a current through the liquid to alter its properties. Be very careful as the chemical can damage paint, mine stayed at a simillar level for several months and then all of a sudden started leaking loads onto the mirror cover paint.

My passenger side did exactly the same - slow steady leak. As it was the pax side i just replaced it with a heated non dimming one from our sponsors. I took the failed mirror apart and cleaned it up and, to be honest, its clean enough to re-install - though, obviously without the dimming fluid. It would be fine except the black plastic trim around the mirror had cracked (thats why the fluid drained out) and the I lost a small piece which had somehow broken off

So it can be stripped and cleaned? Might just do that for the time being, it's got to be better than what it looks like at the moment ☺
