There's a Bowden cable that runs from the release button to the release catch which IIRC is somewhere right up at the top/back of the section that swings out.
Try pressing very firmly in/up on the front of the box while pressing the button in case the catch is somewhat jammed. Otherwise I suspect it will need brute force to break the catch and release it. Once open the whole thing can be taken out fairly easily for repair/replacement. I've had mine out a few times for various jobs, including replacing the light bulb - easiest way to do it believe it or not!

Finally: gone, but not forgotten..... 1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors. e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later) 1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer. And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850! |

Try after pressing the release button, put your hand under the glove box closer to the left hand side and gently pull towards you. Works for me when It sometimes does not open with the button.

has a similar problem today.
i had to open passenger door and pull glove box door forward from the side. the glove compartment seems to be catching/rubbing on the transmission tunnel trim. will readjust tunnel trim tomorrow. |
