Default Should I be worried?

On starting my S8 on a cold morning, there is a very brief metallic rattle that sounds a bit like a chain. It only lasts a second or less. Should I be worried? Perhaps the oil pump not up to scratch?

Take a look at THIS thread Jim, many of us get some noise like this on initial start up. There are other links to pistonheads threads worth reading including an Audi Service Bulletin HERE

I had that noise a few times starting from cold just before winter really set in. I now do an oil and filter change every three thousand miles, and have never had any more start-up rattle, even with ambient temperature at -6 degrees.

odd that the TSB has 2.8 v6's listed in both the A4 and A6 as potentially having this issue but the A8 version is ignored....presumably edited for the US market? I haven't heard a peep out of mine however. Lucky me.

Ford Capri Laser: noisy, slow, thirsty, bouncy, no buttons but it always sounds like it’s REALLY trying and I can’t help but chuckle when it parps and boings along. And people of a certain age stare at it with a wistful look in their eyes that clearly says…I had one of them. And I sold it because of the kids

nothing to worry about Jim, mine has done it from day I got it, if you remember I had the oil pump changed and it made it a bit better for a while, and its also better just after an oil change, the Audi Tech bulletin and this thread puts your mind at ease, with hind sight I probably wouldnt have bothered getting the oil pump replaced on mine but apart from a dent in the wallet can only be a good for the engine I guess.

Mine has had it for a year and a half too, goes away with a new oil change for a month or two, then comes back.
I recently saw on a porche forum (I think it was 986) they use pretty much the same part, but they say Porsche updated the variator it with springs to keep the tension until oil pressure takes over. Shame Audi didnt do that too.
