Default How can I check PCV valve for correct operation

I need to check my PCV valve for correct operation, from what I can see of the clips used currently it must be the Audi original one and that has been on for just short of 177K miles.

If I remove the valve from the vertical metal tube and try to start the car, it stalls but runs fine when plugged onto that tube.

How can I test the valve is running as intended?

I dont know exactly how they work. when I replaced mine I opened the old one up, its just clipped together. The orange diaphragm inside was intact, so I guess I didnt need to replace it. If you do open it up, just be careful not to damage the orange rubber diaphragm, I managed to puncture it with a butter knife I used to open it up. On the audiworld forums a guy replaced his because the rubber diaphragm had disintegrated in the middle. Mine is intact and quite flexible even after 100k miles.
This is after a bit of clean up, it was really gunky in there.

Thanks Goran, I may well take mine apart and give it a thorough clean but first I need to get some new clips.

Took the valve off the car and dismantled it, the valve was full of thick coke deposits which I have now cleaned up. Valve now back on car so I'll see how it goes.

Very useful picture Goran, helped me a lot doing mine yesterday.
Mine is a very slightly different design, in that there are more latches (at least 8 or 10, I didn't count) around the perimeter - that looks like it has just 4, maybe 6?

I cleaned mine even more than that, and when I reassembled it I tested it by sucking/blowing on the pipe connections (while covering/uncovering the other one with my finger).
At first there was a very slight leak, but I found one of the latches hadn't snapped shut. After closing that it was fine however hard I blew!

So maybe that's an older design that doesn't seal as well and they revised it?

Following your comments I took great care opening it and EXTREME care in removing, cleaning and replacing the diaphragm.

As noted in another thread the clips on mine are Clic-R (re-useable) and I bought the appropriate tool (£8 delivered) which both removes and re-attaches them.

1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)

And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

If costs around $60 from Audi. If you managed to remove it I'd just change it to new.

Cheaper in the USA, though there's shipping and customs to consider: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=290953740841

£77.42 from Audi and the factory have 10 in stock.

Just called and bought one as its next to no difference in price to the second hand or forreign ones on eBay.

I'm glad the picture was of some use. If only I was more carefull opening mine I could have re-used it, it was in good condition apart from the gunk.
But I had already bought the new one in advance.
