22nd August 2014, 09:18 AM
Monday was the first time I drove the car for almost a week, there was no issues with starting and no errors apart from brake pad warning lights.
Thats random at the moment.

Drove the car monday, left it till tuesday, drove it again and not touched it till wednesday when Lordhefner came over to look at his lights.
Looking at the cars I noticed the battery was slightly flat.
I went to start the car and just started.
I left it idling and monitored the battery level slowly climb.
I turned the car off when it was at about 60-70%.

Left the car till this morning and it went flat. No error, no lights, just a handfull of clicking.
Jump started the car and went off to work. I took the long way to work which is about 30 minutes drive.

Got in work and the battery monitor still displayed 10%.

Got VCDs out and did a scan.

All looking better but no fault codes for the battery. So I guess that's good.

I went in to the battery regulator and checked the battery was set up correctly and it was.
Checked the measuring blocks and its charging at 14.5v, the battery is getting 14.5v volts but battery state is still 10%.

I think the battery is less than 2 years old and hopefully still under warranty if it is the battery.

Anyone got any idea why the battery level and state of charge will stick at 10%?

Mine after you added the battery warning monitor to mine, after we played that afternoon and mine left yours reading at 65%, but I kept it on and watched it and after 24 miles it finally reached back to 100%, I had the radio on but only Radio 2 so nothing too demanding for the amps and the speakers, and it wasn't raining and didn't have any lights on. +++ So it appears that with the Audi A8 being a heavy electrical dependant car, with all of it's gadgets, I was surprised that it took this sort of distance to charge the car back to full.

Now that I've got it fitted I'll monitor it over the shorter lower speed journeys and see if we can't work out how energy efficient these cars are. Hopefully it is not your battery as after seeing the size of it, I can't imagine that a decent replacement will be cheap to replace and Halfords are unlikely to have one on the shelf in their branded, four year no quibbles return policy which is they way I've always done batteries till now with the likes of my partners and family members cars. +++

......I can't imagine that a decent replacement will be cheap to replace and Halfords are unlikely to have one on the shelf in their branded, four year no quibbles return policy which is they way.

I have had three batteries with three different coding part numbers:

When the OE black Varta battery that I bought the car with (coded 4E0915105A) started to become weak, I bought a new Varta silver i1 110Ah for £119 and coded as (4E0915105DL). The next 18 months were hell with the battery going flat randomly and sometimes seeming to charge really slow when driving and having very little in reserve when sat parked with stuff on. Had to get Green Flag out 4 times. I put it doen to the bugs in the BEM and other control units and the car's age.

October 2013, I went to another of work's campus, parked up and sat with my laptop on for 10 mins and when I came to start the car it was dead.
I did a 'click and collect' purchase on my phone from Eurocarparts for a Lion AGM 700 for £134 and got a taxi there and back. Put it on and coded (4E0915105AK as this is newer model's 95Ah AGM part no.) never had a problem since and can sit with heated seats radio and blowers for ages, totally predicatble. Always 100% unless I do the above for ages and things shut of nice and sequencially and not all at once when it's too late as before - now, even when everything has shutdown, the car still starts as normal, but before it would just wheeze half a turn and stop.

What is more, I have a cigar-lighter voltmeter and this was always 12.3v and occasionally went to 13v. Now it is always >13v and up to 14.2v.
I'm sure the Varta silver was a duffer, but that wouldn't account for the higher charge voltage these days - I wonder if the 4E0915105DL coding caused a problem like undercharging.

If you can get a good deal such as with a voucher code, I would recommend an AGM battery, they really seem like the next step up and can withstand a lot deeper discharging that seems a feature of our cars with their dodgy BEM software and mystery door handle activity.

I wonder if these battery codes can always be decoded by the BEM? Does it just look up charging rate and capacity in a table or is it encoded in the letters? If the former do new battery part numbers it is not aware of send it screwy? Who knows?

Did I read that right? You have to hook up the car to a laptop to tell it what model and make battery? Wow if so then it's no wonder these cars when self maintained end up having a few niggles and issues.

I noticed on a copy of my VCDS print out that so many of the parts have serial numbers with them, and my headlamps that have been changed over by the previous owner doesn't have them showing. Does Audi seriously when they fit all new parts add not only all the part numbers, but the serial numbers for them also?

Regards, Mark.

Does Audi seriously when they fit all new parts add not only all the part numbers, but the serial numbers for them also? .

Not all parts, if you change the spec such as your headlights you need to change the coding so that the features are controlled properly.

The battery needs it's part number coding-in so the charger knows what capacity it is and the charging rate. the serial number is only entered as a way of telling it the battery is new and reset all long-term parameters to 0 - for example internal resistance, ageing etc...

The other thing to be aware of is Component Protection or CP of networked control units and compnents - this is an antitheft mechanism where the VIN in broadcast by the CAN gateway and the components makes sure theirs matches, if not they put themselves into CP mode and only the dealers can remove that.

It is not just Audi doing this, all the German makers are at it and probably others.

Drove home Friday at 1200, battery level at 80%.
Went to drive car at 1200 Saturday and it's flat.

80% to 0% in 24 hours.
New battery needed I guess.

The battery monitoring software update is only for the 10% issues, nothing to do with draining of the battery?

limoncello
23rd August 2014, 11:26 PM
could be either or both still, having the software issue for long periods can damage the battery, also remember the mmi meter is crap, not accurate at all and gets its info from the very module that has the software faullt in the first place.

also there are varying degrees of this issue, the most common is the battery remaining at 10% (but can go up and down ) - but the battery doesnt discharge its a false warning from the module which then causes other modules to shut down as it believes theres not much power. then theres the other end of the scale where the battery needs replacing as well (according to the Audi TSB).

if you have checked the state of the battery with a multimeter and it reads ok, turn on the mmi without the engine on. if you get the "3 minute warning to shut down" within 5 minutes or so its likely the software is at fault.

I got Bosch Silver 5 with exact specs what original black varta but when I coded it I kept the varta's PN and coded in. No issues since then and I needed a new battery after having dame problems what Scott
Same spec battery, use same PN, I assume you still have original black varta, and you'll be fine for good few years.

Only the dealers can update it with their VAS system, you can't update anything with VCDS or CDs in the MMI.
Dealers seem to hate it when customers go in asking for this kind of thing and either quote a rediculous price or make out they have never heard of such a thing.

Is it wort doing?? My Audi guys use VAS and VCDS so I may do it when I go to see them as they are not money mad at all. They usually do updates like that free of charge for ''special customers'' (an@l) if they are doing any work on the car or if they have a spare minute.

where 100 units = 1 hour

so in theory should be pretty cheap

I hate my local Audi dealers.
Always had issues. I much prefer using the VW dealers but since I have an Audi I need to speak to them I do.
And that is what I did today.
They had no idea really what I was talking about, kept repeating "No outstanding recalls".
When they had a slight understanding they said it will have to be booked in for a diag before any work is carried out. That's £60 for 30minutes work.
After that, if it is deemed that a update is required they will charge me accordingly for time taken in doing the update.

I told them to shove it in a very polite way.

I then phoned Audi UK and asked them about the update.
They recognise that there was a update CD for the management component but the part number I gave was superseded and they can't confirm what the new one is or what car but they will find out tomorrow and phone me back.
He did say it's on a CD and sounded really helpful and semi agree go send me the CD to do it my self if it's doable like that. Then he recommended getting the dealer to do it in case anything goes wrong.

I did question about being charged for a software update but he said the update is free, you're paying for the time of the person doing it. Which seems fair but also a little bit wrong I think.

See what he comes back wish tomorrow.
I also asked if there is any goodther software updates for the car.

When I got my 8 I went through a lot of battery headAche, the battery meter never went over 10%. A local test showed a good battery, but it never worked right. Went elsewhere and they had a comprehensive tester that put the battery through a number of tests, it passed all but one. New battery fitted in December 13, varta blue top and it's been fine ever since. Can leave the car for a week and it's down to 40%, a short drive brings it back up again. I do have a battery drain issue caused by the door handles not going to sleep because of a faulty touch sensor.

Are the Audi service front of shop guys all reading from scripts, I also went in helpful to them as you did, with codes, numbers, known faults only to be told the exact same thing, and I got charged for them confirming my faults and none of them fixed and I have a feeling your Audi dealer and mine would charge you for not putting a single thing right.

But I do like the sound of what the guy at Audi UK said, knowledge in this game is confidence, a guy that tells you he don't know what your on about despite being knowledgeable but asking for money for a simple scan which you can do for free dozens of times a day if you choose, well you've come to the same decision as I have, better to walk away! The forum is and the internet is where it's at. +++
