I only got a couple of hours on the engine today due to other stuff so stripped off the timing gear and bracketry.
The previous belt change was done with genuine parts but without the locking tools - note the paint spots :tuttut: http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616266864 With the crank locked, the cams weren't lined up. The timing gear is not very old so it'll all be going back on but this time with the bar. http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616266864 The crank pulley bolts were replaced last time which is a bonus http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616266864 The thermostat was in upside down! I wasn't planning on touching this, but the radiator hose was dribbling much more than normal so it needed to be investigated. The little feature at 6 o'clock is a vent which is supposed to allow the system to bleed air through the thermostat when cold (otherwise the stat gets airlocked and won't open). It's supposed to be at 12 o'clock since that's where the air is  http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616266864 After that I got slightly distracted and made a radiator pressure testing tool :o http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616266864 Hook up to the tyre inflator and check for leaks... http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616266864 |
Simple, but genius!

Oh my!
I’m not impressed with that at all :tuttut: Yes, the crank pulley bolts were replaced about 4 years back. I don’t know if you remember on my thread when that came off and left me stranded on the motorway. That scenario is what prompted the whole cambelt/water pump etc being replaced back then (poorly by the looks of it ) At least it’s been spotted and will be corrected +++ Thank you Doctor :D Loving the radiator testing tool. Genius  |

Lots done today. Started off cleaning the engine
http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616365481 Unusual to leak from the cam seals so I'll replace both of these http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616365481 Better http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616365481 Time for the oil cooler pipe. http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616365481 The old pipe was broken at both o-ring grooves leaving it in three pieces http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616365481 http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616365481 http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616365481 Aluminium version fitted http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616365481 The coolant pipe o-rings, unusually, are both intact http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616365481 The right hand flange was beginning to get a bit crusty though so just as well both o-rings will be replaced http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616365481 On to the inlet manifold - the usual oily grit down between the heads and the manifold flange. I cleaned this out as much as possible http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616365481 before flipping the engine over to take the manifold off, thus ensuring none of the grit gets in to the inlet ports http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616365481 The inlet manifold is a bit grubby so I'll deal with that in a bit http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616365481 The usual oily gunge - I'll clean the area above the inlet ports while the engine is upside down http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616365481 http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616365481 http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616365481 The sump wasn't leaking (also unusual) but it was pretty crusty and the paint was peeling off in many places so this came off to get painted http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616365481 Not bad inside. Some carbon deposits but mostly clean http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616365481 Right way up again to clean under the inlet manifold http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616365481 Much nicer! http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616365481 Breather plate back in place http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616365481 The inlet manifold brightened up well with some Elbow Grease http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616365481 |
It’s such a shame that 95% of this engine beautification won’t be seen. Just as well I can save all these pictures to remind me ;) +++
Just going back to your previous post about the timing, does that mean the timing is/could be out when the new belt was offered up? I still remember my dad timing a car using the old strobe light gun when I was a kid :D Edit: just re read the post. So it looks like the timing was off as the cams weren’t aligned? Can you damage the engine by doing this? I always thought if timing was out you get interference. The rev counter has seen 7k many times since the belt was changed :eek2: |
Nice
"The inlet manifold brightened up well with some Elbow Grease"
Good to see that this can be done. Is this an Actual Product, or just another form of weekend light upper body exercise for you? ;) |

When I re-fit the belt using the proper tools it will be spot on. Quote:

I found these interesting little chunks in the sump on Sunday
http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616536972 Yep, bits of one of the tensioner pads http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616536972 Caught it just in time! http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616536972 The gauze was still intact on this one, and the tensioner locked up properly, so the gauze will go in the bin http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616536972 New pads fitted and the cam & tensioner back in place (spot the slightly cleaner bolts) http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616536972 http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616536972 New cam seals since the blank was already leaking and the open seal was a bit crusty http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616536972 A bit of gunge in the cam cover http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616536972 Cleaned up a bit with new seals http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616536972 Passenger side done http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1616536972 |
