Audi A6 C5 year 2000

Following on from this thread.
http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=10023

My sisters partner has decided he no longer wants the car following the issues he had, so all being well on Sunday I'll be picking this car up to sort out and then hopefully sell on. He has said I can have the car for scrap value as that is where the car was going before I fixed it last weekend.

Only headache is I need to tax and insure it as the car is currently SORN and uninsured.

Looking forward to having a play with what is in effect a disposable car.

They're great cars, I bought my daughter a 1.9 diesel a few years ago and it hasn't missed a beat, returns over 50mpg and is one of the most comfortable cars I have ever driven

Wouldn't mind if this were the diesel version, but its the 2.4 V6 Petrol and has 175K miles on the clock. MOT till April next year, cambelt and top end of the engine renewed recently at Hitchin Audi after the cambelt failed and loads of receipts.

Needs some work, the DIS LCD screen needs replacing and the bodywork is a little rough.

mannyo 30th August 2015 04:36 PM

Well I've just driven the car from Lincolnshire to Hertfordshire, and its quiet apparent there are issues.

1) The wheel alignment is out, it pulls left slightly and the straight ahead position on the steering is out.

2) The drivers window got stuck trying to close it, but seems ok now.

3) Loads of cosmetic issues.

Only other weird thing, it does not have a conventional torque converter auto box but has one of those CVT Boxes. The box has a slight judder at low RPM, but once on the move its fine. However it does seem odd when you plant your foot on the floor, the revs rise to 4K and stay there as the speed increases at quiet a pace. Box will take some getting used to whilst I work out if the car is worth sorting.

The low RPM judder from the box is the most concerning issue, could be lack of use perhaps as the car has only done 4000 miles over the recent MOTs.

Today I ripped out the tacky afermarket headunit and set about reinstalling the factory "Concert" headunit.

However does not work, as I need the code. The code card is missing from the manual, because Whetstone Audi replaced the headunit in 2004 and I did not place the code on the receipt.

Looks like the reason the aftermarket unit sounded dreadful is the car seems to have an upgraded sound system, the OEM wiring has a bucket load of wires on it 90% not used by the aftermarket wiring adapter.

Anyone know where I can get the code, or will Audi have to provide it?.

Architex_mA8tey 31st August 2015 10:09 AM

Have you tried the original code that was given to the first stereo in the car manny? Just wondering if Audi thought it was logical to set the new one at the time to the same code? If not then you'll need to ask Audi I suspect

IT 1st September 2015 02:45 PM

Code is hard coded on the unit from factory, it cant be changed, so it will be different to the original.

Audi dealers will provide the code, but there is some variation in the experience.

If they know/trust you, you might persuade them to provide the code over the phone from the serial number FOC.

Worst case, they'll want you to bring the car in and want to charge you a small amount for the privilege.

Im fairly sure the handbooks at the time suggested the code should be provided FOC, so given my recent experience, if a dealer tried to charge me I'd be on the blower to Audi customer services to straighten it out...

mannyo 1st September 2015 05:42 PM

I've sent an email to Whetstone Audi, in the meantime I've started looking to see if any adapters are available so I can hookup an older headunit I have if the code is not heading my way.

I am quiet reluctant to spend to much money on the car at this point as it may end up in the crusher due to the gearbox issue. I may get the transmission oil changed which may or may not fix it. I've driven it several hundred miles now and the fault is not getting any better or worse.

This is likely to be one or both of the plastic blocks in the regulator having snapped, cheaply replaced with a couple of hours if you are so inclined......

If you don't do it be aware that you may one day not be able to close the window at all! On a rainy day obviously..... don't ask how I know ;)

mannyo 2nd September 2015 06:28 PM

Missed a call from Whetstone Audi this evening, will call them tomorrow, hopefully they have the code or they'll say "yes sir you can have the code for £...." or worse "Sorry we have no records of the code"

mannyo 3rd September 2015 06:25 PM

Whetstone Audi want £20 for the code, and they want to see the car and Radio. Looks like I'll be sticking in a Blaupunkt aftermarket CD player that I have laying around, at least it has the same pinouts so has half a chance of driving the factory amp.

Architex_mA8tey 3rd September 2015 06:37 PM

I did have a CD somewhere that can be used in the drive to reset it and during that process it throws up a code which the last four digits of which are the passcode. It worked on an RNSe unit I was lent for an A3. I'll have to see if I can find it!!

Quick update time,

Spent last weekend ripping out loads of extra wiring.

So out with the remainder of the aftermarket headunit, there was an external satnav module and also a GPS aerial buried behind the glovebox.

Also removed an antique Nokia in car phone system complete with cradle and aerial that had also been hidden behind the glovebox out of sight.

Still not got the code for the radio from Audi, so I took up plan B and installed my old Blaupunkt Woodstock DAB52. As the factory Concert was also made by Blaupunkt the Woodstock had all the same connections so it's installed and also powers the factory amp thats driving the rear speakers. Result is perfect audio from all the speakers, I don't think the rear speakers have worked for sometime but the sound is much improved. Only issue was the power to the unit, as VAG have the red/yellow reversed from standard but have that sorted as well.

Now the only real issue is the gearbox, the 6 speed CVT is known for judder at low RPM which develops over time. I can only assume this has been like it for a very long time, so it may keep going. Its not a very nice drive around town, if you maintain light throttle you can see the RPM vary up/down slightly as you drive along. It's possible to drive around it by using pseudo manual mode, and keeping the revs over 2000 rpm where the issue disappears.

I've driven the car 400 miles now, and apart from the box issue it seems quieter than the D3 but not as comfortable to sit in. It's quieter because unlike my D3 there is no whine from the NSR backend that I've been plagued with on the D3 for 18 months.

6 speed CVT
CVT stands for Continuously variable transmission, there are no speeds or gears as such, it is constantly variable as the name suggests.

47p2 22nd September 2015 11:38 AM

Daughter sold her A6 last week, she had it MOT'd a couple of weeks ago and decided to sell it as she's driving the TT more then the A6.

so how can a mannyo have a 6 speed ?

incidentally my daughter has a CVT on her A6 Avant which has passed 100k and is as quiet as when new

These are 6 predetermined ratios, but essentially any ratio within the gearbox range could be available.

Good video here
https://youtu.be/MhFK5gfAGpM?t=1m31s

That video shows a cone CVT, whereas Audi Multitronic system uses a link-plate chain drive. But the principle is the same by varying the size of the input and output to give a infinite ratio between the max and min.

I guess giving the box these ratio points gives the user familiarity with a regular manual box and the ability to control the speed with throttle.

Essentially that, you move the selector from D to the tiptronic setting and the display changes to 654321 and you get six predetermined ratios.

mannyo 25th September 2015 12:42 PM

I've asked Poole Audi for a quote to renew the CVT oil and get the radio code, so waiting for their response.

Concerned about the 17748, especially considering the engine was rebuilt 10K ago after a cambelt failure to the tune of £4000. 17748 suggests that the timing is out on one of the banks, remembering that I have already replaced the bank 1 camshaft position sensor with a new OEM one because the old one was not working at all.

Also gave the car a good clean and wax, there is a surprising amount of rust when you look close enough, thank goodness the D3 is made of aluminium.

And some fresh pictures from the clean now below.

mannyo 1st November 2015 11:33 AM

Still going with the A6 and its little issues.

Today was no exception, went to use it to visit the shops and at the first roundabout had what I immediately recognised and not one I wanted to hear, as I went round to take the third exit there was the sound of sloshing water and the passenger footwell ended up a little damp.

Quick google after I got back (after driving more slowly round corners), removed the scuttle cover and found it had about 6 inches of water in there. Now in the C5 the drain is located beneath the battery and brake servo, so in we go into the water to undo the battery retaining bolt, disconnected battery and out it came.

After fumbling around some more, found the drain beneath the battery, and unleashed a river of water from under the car but some water remained so started fishing under the brake servo and found that one too so unleashed another smaller river. I've cleared as much crap from the scuttle area as I could before putting it all back together.

Hopefully it'll now be dry, its to damp to sort the carpets fully but I don't think any water had got in until I went round the corner and sent it sloshing through the pollen filter which is now wet in one corner.
