Which Phatnoise?

I know these can be fitted to an '8, but the ones I have seen for sale are not advertised as fitting it. They list A3, A4 A6 and TT I think. So are there different versions? Which do I need for a D2 FL nav equipped car?

Thanks.

PsYcHe 30th July 2009 06:30 PM

as long as it's a vag phatbox it'll work. You may need to flash the firmware if it's came from another car.

Also, you may need a different adapter cable. They are aawesome though

A8, mate! 30th July 2009 09:02 PM

Cheers psyche! What should I be paying for one, brand new?

I'm new to all this...

Do Phatbox fit with all types of stereo/sat nav

I've got the Navigation Plus sat nav in a 2002 A8. Is that compatible?

I've seen list prices of close to £700, but I think Audi are off-loading them at closer to £150 at the moment

darrenjoe90 10th August 2009 03:56 PM

i just asked tony this weekend about phatbox and he said he knows about somethig better and cheaper. just waiting for him to find out and let me know

The_Laird 10th August 2009 04:20 PM

Phatbox alternative

Cheaper than £150?

PsYcHe 10th August 2009 07:31 PM

You can get the iPod adapter thingies for about the same price and they have similar functionality.

The PhatNoise works with all the head units up to RNS-E, though you may need to re-flash if it's used. It has voice prompts for playlists/albums/artists. Even the missus can use it!

This thread

gives you the basics of what you'll need as long as you ignore the p1ssed off bits when nothing worked :D.

You can pick them up from about £80 second hand on Fleabay and they are a cracking bit of kit when its hacked.

I'd like to know what Tony has in mind as a substitute for it though.

CliveH 10th August 2009 09:59 PM

I fitted one in the S4 and it really was plug & play, everything worked first time.

A bit dated now compared to the likes of MP3 players and ipods but essentially does the same thing. I like it +++

Paid about £160 for a new one from US ebay a couple of years ago.

They're not made anymore and there's no support for Vista for the software which you use to set up all the albums on the removeable hard drive, so make sure you have access to a PC with XP on if you're thinking about getting one.

The_Laird 11th August 2009 07:54 AM

Phatnoise better that a dension iPod adapter?

I've got a Dension iPod adapter fitted which plays Playlists on the stereo RNS 4.2) as if they were on of the 6 CDs from the autochanger.
But there is no information on the display, it just says, for example, "CD2, Track 34".
It's good in that you can have huge play lists, so you get more music than on 6 CDs, but it's track information on the screen that I'm interested in.
Any thoughts?

And is Tony on holiday????

PsYcHe 11th August 2009 11:29 AM

i dont think the older head units and dashboards supported anything more than cd info, not too sure on the fl models.

You can get the phatnoise software running with vista in xp compatibility mode and running as administrator.

yes, good point :tuttut:

thebluewhale 11th August 2009 08:02 PM

And if you use Phathack Media Manager it works fine with Vista

CliveH 11th August 2009 08:02 PM

cool, is it downloadable?

thebluewhale 11th August 2009 08:09 PM

Yeah,

If you go to the phathack website I'm sure there's a link to the media manager site. Just beware it's only an alpha build at the moment but it works OK on my PC.

Come on Tony, what you got up your sleeve??

PsYcHe 12th August 2009 08:13 AM

I use PhatHack too, but sometimes you need to go back to the proper PhatNoise manager.

The voice prompts are cool (if a little quiet), so you don't have to remember which playlist is which.

The_Laird 12th August 2009 05:54 PM

But if you do want to buy a Phatnoise....

....they're £125 plus £10 postage, new, from a vag dealer on fleabay. Looks like they're selling off old stock

PsYcHe 12th August 2009 07:47 PM

If you don't have any other unit, I'd go with a phatnoise as you can drop a bigger HDD in there too.

Also, you can take the iPod into the house :)

darrenjoe90 12th August 2009 08:13 PM

dont buy a phatnoise just yet. i think tony has been very busy this week as he has been sorting things out for the german meet this weekend. if he doesnt have time to reply shortly then i will ask him tomorrow. i also was going to buy a phatnoise but when tony told me some details about this other item i thought it best to wait. all i know is that it works like a phatnoise with full control from the head unit. it is card based so all you need is a card reader in your pc and he thinks its only about 30 quid. i am seeing tony tomorrow so i will find out as much detail as possible.+++

A8, mate! 12th August 2009 08:34 PM

Nice one DJ.

So it won't look as good as a phatbox then...

Oh well, if it's £30 then happy days!!

A8_Tony 12th August 2009 10:04 PM

OK guys, here's something a friend of mine bought, which works perfectly with his RNS-D +++
USB/SD Card Reader

PsYcHe 13th August 2009 06:04 AM

Looks OK and would maybe have bought this instead of the PhatNoise (except I got it cheap).

It does look quite limited in the amount of music you can have on it (1000 songs), but that's quite a lot in real terms :)

The_Laird 13th August 2009 07:56 AM

But still nothing more than the Dension iPod adapter by the looks of it...or did I miss something? All I get is "CD 4, Track 23" or similar, and I can scroll through CDs (in reality, play lists on the iPod) and tracks, but with no other information (artist, track title, etc).
So after all that excitement (yes, my day job is dull!), I'll probably stick with waht I have.
Unless anyone knows how to get more info from an iPod on the screen in Navi Plus sat nav....

A8_Tony 13th August 2009 08:49 AM

You could always install RNS-E +++

I've never tried one in the flesh, but from what I've read they are about as good as you'll ever get for the RNS-D - It efectively replaces the TV Tuner from what I've read, and the buttons on the Nav unit itself are then used to send control signals the IMA multimedia adapter to get it to do things over canbus.... Still cant guarantee it will display track names, but if this wont then nothing will !!

CliveH 13th August 2009 09:48 AM

Looks interesting...

It also seems that the unit has its own TV tuner - digital presumably? If so, this could be a very worthwhile upgrade, especially bearing in mind that terrestial TV wont be around for much longer...
