How to check for MMI version?
I'm a long time MMI 2G user on my 2005 A8 but I'm looking for a replacement 3G+ Car.
I'm sure it's simple but I can't find where the version screen is on the enhanced MMI screen  Could someone please tell me how to check the version of the 3G+ MMI on these later cars? Thanks - Julian Later Edit: Now I've had a D4 for a couple of weeks, I find it is easy: Hit 'Menu' button; select 'Top Right' button to get settings; scroll to bottom to select 'Version Information' |
Easiest way to tell is if the MMI click wheel has an additional mini joystick on top. Reasonably obvious in photos if the resolution is good enough in an advert
I’m sure IT has posted about d3 differences and how to spot them before? I think early facelifts were still 2g? |
Hi Adrian, thanks for your prompt reply.
But I was asking about the 3G+ system on the 2011-2017 cars and not the 3G update to 2G [the one with the joystick button]. Regards - Julian |

I've got a feeling you go into this screen as if setting up clock etc and select "setup MMI" tab then the data is shown somewhere in there (but don't quote me on it I dont have a D4 here at the moment to check! +++

Ah sorry, didn't pick up on the distinction - on my B8 S5 it's 3G and then on B8.5 it's 3GP or 3G+ so easy to tell as all later cars have the later MMI system, and thought your query was in the D3 section - d'oh!.
The levels of firmware I'm aware of for the D4 A8 are: P0066 (P is for production so the later the car the later the firmware level prefaced by P) K0097 K0485_18 K0518_7 K0612_8 K0614_1 K0783 K0900 I pulled these together for IT from stored files i have for map updates that require a particular level of firmware first, but as to where you find the info I'm not so sure.....it'll be with the map database update level too, so if it's not an obvious option under car - settings - version information, I'd be delving into the navigation menus in a bit more depth.... Sorry for potentially not being all that helpful :D ETA - d'oh! At least Neil has provided a likely solution while I've been wasting my time on this lol |
Thanks for your input guys; after 10 years experience of MMI 2G on my 2005 A8, it's frustrating to be a beginner again while I look at 2013/4 A8s :(
I found the version screen on an A8 in which I had a test drive today, but forget where it was for next time. :o For info, think it was: HN+_EU_AU3G_P0532_? 8R0060884AH ECE 5.13.8 This was an August 2012 car so I think this is probably what was on the car when new ... Julian |
The latest version I saw on my earlier 2011 car was K0942_4 which is newer than the P0770 I have on the 2014 car!
Despite the MMI software on the older car being newer (it had been updated by Audi Northampton in September 2017) the mapping was older showing 8R0060884ED ECE 6.24.2 After Audi Northampton performed half-an-update on the newer car in May this year I ended up with a newer mapping version 8R0060884FC ECE 6.26.1 but left with the older factory MMI software. Coincidentally I just posted in another thread that Audi Northampton updated the 2011 car but wouldn't update my 2014... -=Glyn=- |
Thanks for your input Glyn.
I'm now two weeks into D4 ownership and my dealer supplied MY2016 and supposedly "had all software updated" as part of the sale. It's got the ...K942_4 'Media Version' but the original 8R0060084CR 6.21.2 2015/16 map data. They are obviously [still] updated separately. When I explained, the dealer has said they will order the latest map data SD card[s] and update it for me ... Here's hoping ... Julian |
Always separate updates for firmware and nav - always has been. Some map update levels require a minimum level of firmware to work, but generally speaking they can be updated independently.

Congrats Julian.
Well done. I'm not jealous, not jealous, really not jealous. I don't really want one!! |
My one has
Media version: HN+R_EU_AU_P0783 Nav. database version: 8R0060884BT ECE 6. 19.3 I am assuming that’s dated now? |
Hi M3;
Yes, they are the original versions installed on your 2014 car. I believe that the P in front of the ...0783 in the HN+ number indicates a 'factory install' [updates to the MMI seem to have a K number]. The ECE 6.19.3 map data number is for the 2014/5 maps. [Unlike the 2G maps on DVD, the 3G+ maps seem to be issued twice a year, so there was a 2014 [6.17.3], 2014/5 [6.19.3] & 2015 [6.20.4] map]. Latest MMI version seems to be K942, which is over 18 months old; latest [2019/2020] map is ECE 6.29.1. Julian |
Thanks Julian for the detailed response. How does one get hold of the latest SW etc without the Stealers? Not going back there after the recent damage they did to my alloys!
|
I can probably help on the firmware and map front - I have most versions of firmware for various generations of Audi, and I installed 6.29.1 on my S5 a while back
Am just South of Gatwick if you don't mind a trek out of the smoke |

Not difficult to do - just need to make sure the correct folder structure is used. If it’s wrong it just won’t recognise it so no risk of harm
Running the update is a little time consuming but not horrific |
So do you need 2 SD cards? For map and SW update
|
You can re-use the SD card - do firmware first, reformat SD card. write map files to it.
Note that the map file needs a high speed 32GB card as the map files are huge. I just use one of the ones we store music on in the car, having kept a backup of the music files to write back on when done |

For your Info mine is exactly the same as Julians. What is the difference between ECE 6.27.2 and ECE 6.29.1 Maps. Just reread it all, 6.29.1 is the latest map. Adrian, how easy is it to do the map update? I drove past yours on Sunday evening on my home from Germany. |
Ray you don’t need no maps! With you being on the road 24/7 I am sure you know the roads back of your hand.+++

It's not difficult to do, but the maps need activating with a small file on an SD card after map installation, then there's a software version management error to remove with VCDS. Takes 2-3 hours in total, depending on the speed of the SD card. Ideally wants a battery charger rigged up throughout so the battery doesn't get a hammering. |

Even I don't know everything. OK I like to brag and make out I've been everywhere, but truth be told, everyday is a schoolday. |

For my 80 year old brain that is starting to sound a bit complicated. Connecting a charger is no problem, that was my line of work when I first started to earn a proper crust. Think the best way for me is to forget it, unless you put the kettle on and I drive down your way. |
Always an option if you're in this neck of the woods :D

Might be well worth the drive down to actually meet up with you. But then again I have been promising that for a few years. Lot easier now that I have dropped all the chauffering work. PM me when you have a spare couple of hours and I'll remortgage the house to buy some fuel. |
