2001(Y) A8 3.7 Quattro Sport, £1100, 191K Miles

NEW REDUCED PRICE £1100

As I have now purchased a replacement A8, my old one is now for sale. The car was declared SORN 3 weeks ago, and until then has been used daily.

I have owned this car for 2 years, and its been trouble free bar a couple of small issues. Summary of current spec below.

Age: 2001 - Y Reg
Model: A8 3.7 Quattro Sport
Colour: Santorin Blue
Current Mileage :191,000
Previous keepers: 2 (1st Audi UK, then last owner for 10 years). I am the third owner.

MOT expires in May 2014.

Car is currently declared SORN and uninsured, so will need to be taxed. Test drive availability is therefore limited to a few hundred yards of farm track.

Bose Sound System,

RNS-D satnav.

Electric rear sunscreen,
Rear Side sunblinds,
Electric glass sunroof,
4 x Heated Electric Recaro Sport Seats,
4 x Electric Windows,
Dual Zone climate control,
Auto dipping rear view mirror,
Colour Maxidot (DIS) display,
Leather / Alcantara interior in light grey (Platinum) colour
Electric seats with loads of adjustments.
BI Xenon headlights (Audi Xenon Plus)

Cambelt changed in January 2012, Tyres changed shortly afterwards.

Currently has 18" RS6 wheels fitted, and tyres have loads of tread.

The car has a fully documented history going almost as far back as the PDI. There is every invoice for work carried out back as far as 2002, all nicely filed by year. Every MOT is available, and lots of tax discs as well.

Everything currently works perfectly, the car is mechanically sound having had all the important advisories from the last MOT attended to (exhaust leak, new track rod ends, CV Boot). The car has completed two trips from the UK to the south of Spain and back again.

Internally the car is 95% perfect, there are a couple of marks from child seats on the back seats and that's about it.

Bad bits

Speedo mileage display has weird issue which partially obscures the trip display 000's.
The car has seen a lot of paint spraying over the years and the paint condition is perhaps average.
The front bumper is peppered with stone chips, as is the leading edge of the bonnet.
The lacquer on the boot lid top has lifted in one corner.
Windscreen has a small chip in it.
Both foglight grills missing
Lower outer trim on drivers door is separating from its backplate.
Engine light comes on if cleared, after a few days/weeks (random) due to a dodgy post cat lambda probe connection, I have no access to the underside to fix the wiring. The probe is fine, and within spec when working (its just the electrical connection). The performance of the engine is unaffected.

Given the below par condition, I am looking for offers around £1100 for the car as it currently stands. The price reflects the general external condition of the car.

Car is located in Blandford Forum, Dorset.

I'll take some newpictures at the weekend and add to this thread (weather permitting).

Some history with pictures, here.

I want to be totally honest with the sale, so won't be over inflating the spec of the car.

Forgot to mention, the engine light comes on after a few days/weeks depending on weather. I'll add the details to the first post.

Over the 2 years, I have gone through most of the invoices for work, and added the work I have had done. Attached to this post is an Excel spreadsheet which summarises the information available.

Whoever buys the car can have my electronic filing system for the car on a USB stick, including pictures, documents, invoices and this excel spreadsheet.

A lovely colour. Just a shame about the boot lid. The car was well specced as it has Bose, electric rear blind, heated Recaro seats, dipping mirror and Bi Xenon that mine doesn't and is six months older. About the only thing in common is that I have the dodgy instrument cluster issue, except mine is over the 'miles'. Toying with the idea of fitting the rear blind, as it seems the least complicated. GWWS.

Shame you are so far away I need a cheap A8.

mannyo 4th January 2014 07:11 AM

it is a shame, it even has half a tank of petrol in it. that would get you most of the way back.

Go on A8 Doc, you know you want to :)

It will help to balance your garage.

Still available folks, I drove it up and down the farm track at the weekend and left the engine running until it reached operating temperature. Still running perfectly.

Found another picture which shows how the car looks once its been fully cleaned properly. This was taken in July 2013 at the Gaydon Heritage Motor Museum. Sadly 2 months later, the last remaining foglight grill was stolen from the car whilst it was parked in London.

The DVLA have finally got their act together and the SORN is finally in place. Thats taken nearly 8 weeks to process.

I have had a little interest in the car, but it seems rural Dorset is not the location to sell cars from.

Price now reduced to offers around £1100, and subject to buyer paying in full and purchasing the car unseen (need to buy road tax), I'll even drive it to the destination and include the original Quattro sport alloys (no tyres on them) in the sale.

Car looks great ...if i had the money .My £3.7 is at 212,000 miles so far. MOT next week and then oil and filter change.

I'll deliver the car anywhere in in England/Wales, Scotland maybe pushing it a bit.

I need the car gone soon, seriously considering put it through the local auction house or possibly bringing the old girl back into service, but I need to weigh up taxing/insuring and running two A8's.

Perhaps the pictures below of just some of the paperwork for the car, from an assortment of specialist and Amersham / Poole Audi may tempt some. You can see all the recent history, MOT and tax discs I have and also in addition just a small selection of the rest of the paperwork.

mannyo, I got more than what you're asking from a scrap dealer, and mine had a busted gearbox, want me to dig out the contact details?

Seems a real shame that it should come to that.

mannyo 5th February 2014 06:23 AM

I think its the mileage and the apparently original untouched gearbox/fluid thats putting people off. The car has no evidence of anything ever being done to the gearbox. but the gearbox is currently running perfectly. All gears engage smoothly, there are no abnormal sounds etc. As soon as the question is asked, and I answer it seems to deter people. I am that confident in the car, that subject to arrangements will drive it anywhere(Except Scotland, thats just to far) to deliver it.

Would be a shame to scrap the car, considering its fully documented past back to day one but its been sitting here now for 2 months, started and warmed up weekly, and occasionally driven a short distance up/down the farm track.

That's what gets me. By comparison, mine's is a 3.7 on a 51 plate with only 58k miles on the clock. No history at all, other than two service stamps in the book and a few tax discs.

I'm in a similar boat in that I have a A4 2.5 TDi QS sitting outside with 135k on the clock, with an engine that won't fire. I need to get it fixed and sold as I need the money.

mannyo 21st February 2014 11:47 AM

The old girl is still available, its covered 0.2 miles in the last three months although the engine has been run every week.

I had a PM requesting the tyre tread depths, so I have taken one photo of a tread section from each tyre. The tyres have mud on them because I live on a farm, and access is via a farm track which is quiet muddy at the moment. The image order is

Offside Front

Nearside Front

Nearside Rear

Offside Rear

Cross section of Offside front after a quick wipe with a damp cloth.

Also shown is the instrument cluster with engine running as of 6pm today.

Also discovered the passenger footwell light is out, so I'll change the bulb at the weekend.

I did embed them but they are huge, so took them out again.

Good news, the car is provisionally sold pending collection and paperwork. I'll update all in due course, but it looks like it'll be staying in the fold.

Indeed - and patience is a virtue. Good result.

great news+++

Phil303 12th March 2014 09:37 PM

I know the chap who's bought it. Really nice guy. I bought my 1999 Audi Cabrio from him several years ago. I loved that car...

In a 'isn't it a small world' type scenario, it turned out he was selling a D3 A8 that I enquired about last week when I thought I was going to have to sell my only-just-purchased S8.

madcjd 14th March 2014 09:07 PM

Phil....that's very kind of you to say!

I think it would be rude for someone not to buy this car....it's such a well written ad and judging by all that paperwork......a very well maintained/cared for car.

Not sure how long I'll own the car for, but, I will enjoy driving it during my quest for a nice, well equipped A6 avant.

I'll keep you posted.

I think that Adrian_E had one of the most cared for A6 avants for sale recently on here - link is HERE if you're interested +++

See you tomorrow,

Now its taxed, I took it for a short run around the bypass yesterday and its running fine. Gears and everything all working smoothly, so you'll have no problem getting all the way back home. I only did a few miles, but that more than the 0.5 miles its done since the start of December.

mannyo 16th March 2014 01:05 PM

Car has now been collected and winging its way back to Bucks not far from where it was PDI'd in 2001, so I am now down to just one A8.

3.7 slp 16th March 2014 07:02 PM

That's great news Manny it's a great car and the new owner will love it👍👍
