Exhaust pipe trims
Has anyone ever had the down swept pipes on a 3.0TDi replaced with straight polished tips like those on the 4.2?
I had something similar done many, many moons ago on a Bora I had and it was a simple job for the place that did it- chop of down swept standard exit and weld on replacement tips. Anyone ever had this done on an A8? Any complications that would make it harder than the above? |
Yeah, on my mates '06 4.2TDi D3, both down tailpipes replaced with straight square ones +++
No complications or ''side effects'' ;) |

Thanks Lyons and M-A8 I asked this same question in the middle of January did not get one reply ?
Mine are tacked on I think ? Will have a look at the weekend Looks so much better with straight out pipes |

Don't forget that not everyone may have so much time on their hands like me to research almost every thread on this forum and then look for answers in ETKA or Elsa :D I do have to much time ... and I genuinely like helping anyone no matter what, unless something is out of my zone then I will just keep quiet ;) |

Any idea if the 4.2 is the same set up? If so, are the pipes etc the same diameter? I'm sure that would be too easy. |
What are the differences between 5 and 5A and 4 and 4A?
|
From the looks of it diameter on the silencer seems to be same.
No sizes given in ETKA. You will have to measure it. Also can't tell what is the difference between 4 and 4A, only from the looking at it one seems to be slightly shorter. A's are around 40quid more expensive |
Ok cheers.
Is there a part number for the 4.2 trims? |
In fact, looking on autotrader it appears not all 4.2 TDi's came with straight tips.
I might be safer going for 3.0 petrol tips if they were the same diameter. I'll try and get 1 off at the weekend and have a measure. |
Has anyone on the forum taken off the D3 3.0 Tdi tail pipes and fitted straight out pipes
I don't want to grind off my tail pipes to find out the straight out ones do not fit |
Quote:
You will be better off (money wise), way better, if you go for non Audi tail pipes. Something quality of course......and possibly ( please :) ) slightly bigger ones than stock :D There is enough room for at least 1/2" bigger straight single ones, it will look sooooo much better. Look at the gap around mine quads (4x 3"), no complaints at all. I can bet £20 there is enough room to fit 3" |

Same bumper on 4.2 diesel (down pipes) and petrol Plus you do not need to cut them out, there is a jubilee clip http://www.audiworld.com/news/04/a8tdi/a8tdi1.jpg http://images.richardsspecialistcars...0c-640x480.jpg http://images.motoring.co.uk/images/...25fbfda-m2.jpg |
Yeah that is what I was wanting at least 3" something that looks more aggressive especially as I have bought original S8 badge from Audi for the boot
I put two scorpion tail pipes on my old D2 sport it transformed the car I will go out this weekend and measure the pipes out of the back boxes so I can see what will fit +++ |
Quote:
But, it's your call mate You wont fit bigger than a 3" without cutting the bumper |
Yeah I know but couldn't afford a proper S8
Don't want to cut my bumper either so will have to go for bigger tail pipes and just be a wannabe ! Like a one litre corsa with a 4" tail pipe ?? Hopefully will get some more S8 bits as well, grill, mirrors etc. Still looks better with straight out pipes S8 or not Do you agree ??? |
Quote:
Just get straight 3" tail pipes and de-badge the rear leaving rings only +++ |
Mm mm yeah would make a difference bigger pipes and de badged
Will leave my badge on until I get pipes done The amount of people who have asked me to have a look in my S8 is unbievable I was up at our local halfords the other day and always park my car miles away from anyone else, but when I came out as normal you always end up with a scrapper or a transit park along side ya ?? Anyway I noticed a man stood between my car and a transit van,he saw me and asked if he could have a look in my S8 He even said he had owned a couple of D2 sport A8's and just sold his D3 I didn't start mine up until he had gone !! And didn't tell him it was a diesel ?;) |

Anyone who asked you about looking at your ''S8'', even the 8's owner, they are just simply thick. The would probably believe even if you would stick R8 or RS8 badge :D There is so much difference between S8 and any other 8. No matter if you look from front back side inside, whatever (bumpers, grille, lights, boot lid, mirrors, interior inc trim clocks seats callipers exhaust and on and on and on) I personally couldn't keep my mouth shut if someone would ask if they can look at my "S8" (IF I would have a S8 badge), I would have to correct them instantly, but again, its a personal choice and if that makes you happy I just can't comment more on this subject. Some pictures would do ;) |

I used to see a lovely D2 around the town on an 02 plate
I pulled along side him in Morisons one day,he asked if it was a S8 ,I had to admit and tell him it was an oil burner I put some pics on under a Post called "ifinally back on the A8 forum" Iam not brilliant with computers so don't know how to put a link in to it I have attached one pic,I think photos are too big so will have to reduce them |

Looked at your rear bumper and as mentioned before, tail pipes swap would be a piece of cake. 3" is the way to go but don't stick them out to much. Straight away I can see 2 upgrades which would transform the car to your S alike look. LED DRLs http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7192 ...and Carbon interior http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7220 ...and de-badged S8 grille as you mentioned it to transform the front http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7526 |
M-A8
Can you tell me where I can find a thread or post that will tell me what all the numbers and letters mean on the inside page of my service book ? I have seen it somewhere but cannot find it Cheers Andy  |

They are awesome, the carbon looks amazing, definitely on the to do list
How do I get the main beam lights to work separately from dipped,I have just fitted a quality hid light set,led number plate lights,I fitted whiter brighter main beam bulbs and tried several sets of led side light bulbs but all kept putting error on dash even with extra resistors ? And all supposed to be can bus error free ? |
Thanks for liking my car mate
I will try the virtual vag thingy out of interest and see what it come up with What make of wheels are on your car I really like them I had Lenso Concerto on my last D3 A8 and will be looking for another set of 20" wheels for my car now Iam wanting to lower it as well on vag com if that's the best way to do it ? |

If Xenon and main halogen then sorry, my fault, you wont be able to do LED DRLs. The best Halogen bulbs are MTEC Super White ONLY (55W or 100W), or HOEN from USA only. Trust me, I've spend hundreds of pounds on testing most H7s on the market. Still have MTECs on the fogs, they are really really good mate. The only way you can get 501s side lights working without the error is if you fit 10W resistors with heatsink No other way http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/10w-res...-233-h6w-433c/ This fella (link above) sells MTECs as well. Never trust Error Free 501 bulbs, there is not a single bulb on the market around the globe which would work on D3s without additional errors. There is certain type also which will last a long time and wont fall into pieces because of the heat. I'm off to shop, I'll be back in 20 so fire up if you have more questions. |

Car is very nice, but it needs bigger wheels. Carbon interior is a tough job for two, but read the old thread and it's all explained inc. cost. My wheels are German make, found them originally on a same D3 (colour) in USA, took me 7 months to get a set. Never seen a second set like mine (gunmetal with diamond cut face) They are S5 replicas, but better looking (the way spokes curve) Check Hartmann Wheels in USA They also have a HUGE online photo album of all sort of A8s on lots of different wheels. Lowering - VCDS (Vag) is BEST Be back soon mate |
Thanks so much mate the info is so much appreciated
I have xenon and halogen but will definitely be looking and pricing up the side light bulbs Will catch up with you later mate as we are out tonight at a birthday bash Best Regards Andy  |

For halogens I strongly recommend MTEC Super White (55 or 100W main beam and 55W fogs) Sidelights Them http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/501-w5w...bulbs-white-1/ + This resistors, but keep them outside NOT inside the unit, connect resistor and stick it out of the unit and then close the cap http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/10w-res...-233-h6w-433c/ |
Champion mate will do that, will follow your links for side lights and main beam bulbs
Cheers Andy |
On the PR codes for your car, next time your in Audi give them your reg / chassis number and they can print the PR code list with descriptions for your car .

I had a look underneath at the weekend there and they arectually welded on, not jubilee clips. As shown in the diagram earlier on there are what appears to be 2 downward swept trims as standard, one on top of the other. The "straight" pipe behind them is actually oval I think, which wont make for easy connecting. Did you measure the diameter of the main downswept trim? |
Hello Lyons
No never got them done We have a local exhaust place called exhaust a fix, they quoted me £180 to take off the trims and weld on 3" slashed tips, just today went through to get the car booked in and they said it was £180 a side ?? No way ?? So still looking Mine are also welded on |
Still haven't got mine fitted either. I've attempted it a couple of time but given up on both occasions.
I've decided the easiest way to do it is to take the existing down swept trim off (held on by 2 spot welds), cut them, slide on new trims, then reweld to car. |
