ESP Long Press

Not sure why I did but I did and this where I'm at.

I turned my ESP off, pressed the button for about 10 seconds and the light went off.

That was 2 days ago and I've not driven a car since.
Drove it today and pressed the ESP button to see if the light would came on and it did not.

I have no ESP light on my dash.

What did I just do?
What does this mean?

PsYcHe 5th September 2014 09:48 AM

Pretty sure it should reset when you restart the car.. Try holding it in for 10 seconds again.

ScottD3 5th September 2014 09:52 AM

Done that nothing.

Can you turn ESP off with you got brake pad warning on?

snapdragon 5th September 2014 10:03 AM

Look at ABS on VCDS, maybe it says : ESP button stuck - and you can clear the fault codes.

PsYcHe 5th September 2014 10:05 AM

Is it the brake pad warning, or brake system warning?

ScottD3 5th September 2014 10:10 AM

brake pad warning.
I got a dodgy sensor somewhere.
Looking at that this afternoon.
The pads have less than 10% ware on them, so I know its not them.

ScottD3 11th September 2014 03:57 PM

The light is back.
WooHoo.

Took a couple of days and hours driving but it's back.

WooHoo

Hi Scott
Glad it's all sorted now
I also can't stop my self from asking why holding the ESP button for so long??

A single, quick press deactivates the ESP. A 5 second press and hold deactivates the ESP and the ASR (traction control). I have done it a few times, but never had any issues with it coming back on. They recommend turning all those gizmos off when you want a screaming take-off from a standing start. Didn't appear to make much difference to me though.

Cheers Lee, good to know +++

Its also ah hem quite handy if for example, you felt like trying to put a V10 S6 into a 4 wheel drift without ESP putting you back right again...

So I've heard..... :D

Nice one Ian
So did you managed or not?

daviesbike 12th September 2014 07:08 PM

Wow i had no idea that this could be done +++ .. so if the ESP is off single press what dose this do if in the snow for example because im sure it would spin all 4 wheels ... what will happen with esp and ASR off in snow as an example .. im not sure i understand the difference ... Blond moment :)

mannyo 12th September 2014 07:58 PM

I had all four wheels spinning in the D2 outside my house with ESP switched on, because all four wheels lost traction equally the car believed it was in motion and nothing was wrong. I had to get out and dig the car out with shovel before it would move.

Simply put, ASR is Anti Skid Regulation, aka Traction control. If it thinks a wheel is spinning, it will apply brake and sort it out. With quattro to be honest, you dont see it much on tarmac, just snow / ice etc unless you have north of 400 horses and at least a morning dew... lol.

ESP is Electronic Stability Control, i.e. is the car going in the direction that the steering wheel is pointing and is it all nicely under control. If not, it backs off the power and inteferes to correct it. If you wanted to go sideways, lose the back or generally be a hooligan, you need to turn off ESP...... apparently....

Snow is tricky. As said, if all 4 wheels spin at the same rate, it is possible that ASR wont know anything is wrong, until one bites and then all hell breaks loose... +++

ESP in operation can be quite amazing.
I remember the first time I triggered it in my late-lamented PF S8, not long after I first got it, so about a dozen years ago.
I was pootling along, basking in the comfort, on a road I know well and arrived at a mini-roundabout with maybe a tad too much speed. :tuttut:

It was during the daytime, quiet, dry and sunny, no other traffic, and I suddenly realised as I was actually on the roundabout that I had intended to turn right (it's only a 3-way junction, but that's still 90 degrees) rather than go straight on (which was the next exit, no turn off to the left).

So I heaved on the wheel, expecting some sort of drama, and it just went round with a couple of twitches and a LOT of G-force to where I pointed it. And yes, the ESP light did flash!
I remember thinking at the time "bloody hell, that was impressive for a car of this size!"+++

Sure.... if you're happy to wait a few extra seconds for the fun to start... :p

PsYcHe 14th September 2014 11:03 AM

Shh... or they'll all want one :)

M-A8 14th September 2014 12:29 PM

...soooo, to clarify, in order to disable ESP and ASR I have to press and hold ESP button for 5 seconds???
Is there a light for ASR saying that system is switched off??

And, what happens after switching the engine off and on again, do both systems are still disabled or they have to be activated again??

Thank you

Delboy 14th September 2014 01:44 PM

Indeed the long press enables 4 wheel drifts.

Its a weird system on the Audi, bmw used to have two lights that would come on to let you know that its all turned off and your left to fend for yoursef, on the Audi IIRC the light comes on then goes off, and needs a restart to reset it.

Not how it should be in my opinion but whatever.

M-A8 14th September 2014 04:37 PM

Cheers Del +++
And yeah, it is a bit stupid, there should be another warning light for ASR off
