HELP!!!!!!!! 4.2TDI not starting

Just putting my 2007 4.2tdi on the road, it was a damaged repairable , repaired the body damage last saturday and it went to VOSA for its VIC check on Tuesday , the car has started fine since i got it , it hasnt done many miles as i cant tax it until VIC marker is removed , however my Dad took it to the VIC check for me , started in the morning no problem ,drove about 5 miles to VOSA and parked up , booked in and then was told to move car into garage. He said it took a couple more turnovers that usual then started up and everything was fine, VOSA checked the car and then come to start it and the car would just turnover with no sign of life. Had to get it recovered back home , initial investigation i found that the battery was only 77ah and was rubbish , im hoping its just the battery . i dont think it was coded to the car as its been sitting a while before i got it and i think someone has just thrown a battery in to get it going. If it isnt the battery does any one have any ideas , i believe that the crank position sensor can go and that would cause similar issues of the engine just turning over with no life. I scanned it last night but under engine in vcds but the only code found was check abs controller or something along those lines. I will be coding a new battery on and rescanning it this afternoon so any ideas would be greatly appreciated as i havnt even drove it on the road yet !!!! Could someone post the location of the crank position sensor from ETKA as i have found etka online but the 4.2tdi isnt included????? Thanks in advance PWACKA8 |
When you replace the battery the car is going to end up littered with fault codes. Replace battery and code it, then scan for faults and clear them all. Now try and start the car, if it does not start scan for faults again.

Thanks for your reply I fitted a new Bosch s5 110ah Battery tonight and then coded the battery ,once complete i cleared all the codes and then got out locked it and then unlocked and tried to start it , no joy , just kept spinning over , didnt even splutter. My missus is getting a bit cheased off with me know as with 4 young kids shes not happy with me taking her car to work and now the car has passed the VIC check i can tax it if i can get it to the MOT station so i can actually drive it!!!! My plan was to be using the car by now and posting a thread with my progress getting it all sorted , not trying to get it started ??? Now i have my VCDS working if i can help anyone in the northwest give me shout! did you do an auto scan then a full clear of the codes as some battery replacement ones still seem to be present along with some really old faults from 2013.

I did a auto scan then cleared all codes then turned ignition off and locked and unlocked car then ignition on and done another auto scan?

There is a lot more in there than I would expect after it has been cleared down.
Either it needs a clear down again or there is something more. Almost like the wiring/ earthing has a problem which is unlikely on a modern car. |
It's throwing an error on the power management module. That can cause all manner of horrors.. Has someone jump started it wrong?
Also an error on the oil pressure sensor, not sure, but if that's throwing a wobbly, then the car may not fire in order to protect itself. |
I have heard about the power control module before , i take it its not option 61 in vcds battery control? is there a way to test the module with vcds?
Im hoping to get home handy from work so i can go through all the fuses and check them.Can anyone point me to the location of the power control module? thanks again for all your posts so far! |

So.. the battery may have died.. if the D3 isn't jumped properly, it can (and probably will) fry the power control module.

just doing some more investigation , do you mean option 61 battery control module or is it the part No.8E0907279E which is i think called the power control module?

also they would need to have connected the earth side of the jump cables to the "hexagon bar" that is above the battery to jump start it properly and not just to the positive and negative terminals of the battery (see owners manual)

The log file looks like it wasn't cleared and has lots of low battery spurious faults/red herrings. Can you charge the battery choose autoscan in VCDS choose the Audi A8 D3 from the popup list Untick Use CAN only Tick Display freeze frame (to include voltage, date and rpm) Clear all DTCs Try and start car Click Start again and new post log here. It may be worth slightly undoing a union on one of the easiest to get to injectors (17mm) and cranking, diesel should leak out in pulses. is it cranking healthily? |

Battery coding looks ok, but wouldn't cause the car not to start.
Is it just cranking and cranking? If you crank can someone see if gas/air is pumping from the exhaust? You have fuel so I wonder if the shut-off / throttle is not opening? Maybe someone who knows more about the 4.2 tdi can say. Weird that there is no code. Also why is there no Address 25: Immobiliser on your logs? Can you connect to it manually by choosing 25 ? Any sign of water under the drivers footwell carpet? |

At 11.55V battery does not look too good while doing scan, this could be dropping to under 10V while cranking and preventing car from starting. Looking at voltage reading and supply voltage errors I would say it's either discharged, bad or poor connection for +12V or ground.
Charge battery, measure battery voltage with multimeter at the battery and on the car, check how much voltage drops while cranking. |
I have keyless and also have both 05 and 25. is the immo listed on the installation list of the can gateway, maybe the car is not looking for the immo so will not start. Not sure if simply enabling it on the can gateway is enough though

Had to leave on the path for now, working in Surrey now till thursday , i am going to have one last go thursday night when i get home , if it still wont start i will have to get it recovered to an audi specalist on Friday morning.
As luck would have it my parents have gone on holiday so i have my dads car to get about. Will update with how i get on thursday/friday. Thanks again for all the advice , will investigate the missing immobilizer in the mean time. Thanks PWACKA8 |

Interesting, I did a quick google and found a US S8 without address 25

Just checked another VCDS scan I have and it has the immob at 25 too.

Interestinly I have just looked at my scans and the early ones have 25 & 5
but after I fitted a a acc compatible gateway 25 is no longer listed How strange :Confused: |
I'll try and take a look at mine later and see if it has both still as I have ACC.

Thanks for all the posts guys .just got home after a 5 hour drive .checked battery I had left on charge before I went away and said to the missus do us a favour and unplug the battery charger in the morning when u get up!
Strangely it wasnt fully charged .so i asked when did u unplug the charger.she replied before I went to bed like u asked Grrrrrrrr Battery back on charge .will be back on it in the morning |
Scanned again and no immob on 25?
Had to admit defeat and get it recovered to an audi specialist in Liverpool as i need it running asap as my dad is back friday and he needs his car back. Hopefully they will be able to sort it!!!!! Picked the car up yesterday , started first time on the button , had a lovely drive home.
Parked on the drive , half an hour later , wouldnt start .Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr This is driving me nuts , garage reckoned it was a wiring fault. Hopefully getting someone out from the garage on monday as ive said im not having it recovered on another transporter , ive allready had my rear bumber and front bumper damaged getting on and off transporters. Will update on Monday ! watch this space!!!!!!1 |

Indeed worth remembering little things like that, would applying jacking mode after lift mode also prevent the car trying to self level?
