Is there a way to check you have the latest possible firmware and if not is it possible to update it?

To check the MMI software version, go to Radio, press "Setup", "Settings" (up-right arrow), "Version". Latest MMI 2G version is 5570.

To check your maps, eject the DVD in the boot and check the label. The reader is behind the removable panel on the left.

Is it possible to upgrade 2G to 3G?

It's been done a couple of times yes, but parts cost alone would be £1k+ (that's with 2nd hand parts!). Lots of modules/wiring need replacing and it's a lot of labour from what I've read. Overall verdict is that it's generally not worth the cost and effort.

Checked the firmware and its 55.7.0 so I guess thats upto date. Great!

You can check the Navigation version from the MMI. Just select Navigation then click Setup and scroll to 'Version Information'. You'll see a display like this:

Media Version
EUROPA_10600_2413 [1060 is firmware version in NavBox]

Database Version
EHW421/20140806004921 [2014 is Map year - note that this is 2015 DVD]
