Name that tune
Can someone more cultured than myself (ie most people) please tell me what this damn tune is called?
I know it's a really famous piece, and I seem to remember it was used in something like Jason and the Argonauts, or a similar movie of that period but, with no intelligible lyrics to look up, it's almost impossible to search for. It starts at 40:25 but becomes more audible and recognisable at 40:54. https://youtu.be/w5_kWzUahQU?t=2425 |
I'll check if I know the tune later as my work computer doesn't have speakers attached.
If maps are of an interest here's two links that I use quite often at work. https://maps.nls.uk/ https://legacy.lib.utexas.edu/maps/historical/ And specific to Norfolk, which has 1946 aerial photos. http://www.historic-maps.norfolk.gov.uk/ +++ |
Thanks for the links Matt +++
I don't have an interest in maps per se, I just enjoy watching documentaries. That one is from the BBC 'Timeshift' series, which I actually started watching because of an earlier episode someone mentioned here (I think) called 'Roof Racks and Hatchbacks: The Family Car'. |
My first guess was Red Army Choir Song of the Steppes/Plains but having checked that out I dont think that it is judging from the short extract.

I'm sure it's a really famous classical/operatic piece and I know it was used in at least one classic movie -- can't for the life of me remember which one though. |

Can recommend the Dirty Money and Rotten series on Netflix. Episode 1 of Dirty Money: The VW NoX is good and very well put together, if from a US perspective. Also Icarus is well worth watching, it's about an amateur cyclist who want's to dope and documents the whole process but then the story twists to the Russian doctor who was head of the Russian WADA and the Sochi Olympics. |
Have you tried using a phone app to "listen" to the extract - such as Shazam etc? Might work. . .

I've even tried one or two apps/sites that are supposed to be able to determine the name of a hummed tune (such as Midomi) but I think my humming is probably a little off-key  |
Almost certainly the Red Army Choir and I recognised it immediately and can hum a lot more of it.
But as for what it is and the composer, my aging brain can't dig that out...... |
I thought I remembered it from Hunt for Red October but couldn't find it there. Almost sounds like the Russian national anthem. It's bugging me now...
