Hi

i have been told i have a gps tracker fitted to my car.is there anyway of tracking my car without having to get a service provider and using my current gps unit?

have you got a gps aeriel located on the boot (item 3 here) ?

Nope. GPS is a receive only technology based on (32?) US owned geostationary satelites orbitting the planet...

If the device that is fitted has any sort of 'talk home' facility then it must transmit out on either a mobile phone SIM over GPRS/3G etc or use a licensed radio frequency - Both of which will be bespoke and need the service providers input.

Your in Car GPS Sat Nav receives the same signals as the tracker, but via a different aerial and the two are unaware of each other.

The trackers are designed to be hard to find, and hard to know if they are there, otherwise they'd be found straight away and removed by theiving scum +++

thanks ,so the unit is useless to me and i can rip it out? i have had a issue with it before disabling the fuel pump and causing cut outs at 150km/h randomly.i disconnected it from the fuel power supply line and im sure with some effort i can trace the wires and find the unit. i thought there might be a use to it but it seems like its just extra weight.
