Gearbox gone into limp mode

Hi there

My gearbox went into limp mode this morning. The car in question is a D2 S8 final edition. Mileage = 160,000. It has never had a gearbox service. Would a oil and filter change change alleviate this problem?, I am assuming the worst (i.e. rebuild) could someone please advise of any good auto box specialists. I am in the bedfordshire area.

Many thanks all

Not sure of a specialist, but that's probably it on the way out.

Rebuild is about £1300 if I remember rightly, a recon box is about 2k (can't remember if those include removal/refit).

You might get away with a fluid and fliter job, but at 160k, you could cause somethign else to fail soon after anyway.

I bit the bullet when mine went and got a VAG service exchange box with 2 years unlimited mileage warranty. for that you get a new gearbox, torque converter, TCU and even the oil already in it. The cost was a not inconsiderable £2400 for the exchange but when you consider a refurb doesnt give you new everything then its worth thinking about. . .
I think Singh (Amar) on here had a contact in his area that did refurbs at an OK price should you want to go down that route. . . you need to check out the MAF sensor with VAGcom too to make sure that hasnt gone.

Personally, at 160K I'd save the money from a fluid change now and just get the box fixed/replaced.... I think changing oil now will be waste of time... sorry...

Many thanks for all your replies, just spoke to a person over at A8 Parts and he said I would only get around £1250 for the car, so I am thinking maybe a rebuild.

Your wheels alone are worth around that. It's a lovely car. Get the box rebuilt and enjoy it for years to come. +++

I would seriously consider going manual at this point

That's about the going rate for boxes from Audi - mate said RS6 boxes are about the same. Defo the best option, if you can justify spending the money as you'll have warranty and a known quantity going forward. Worth then doing a gearbox oil change every few years/tens of k miles to keep it running sweet.

Is it defo a knackered box? Does it stay in limp mode all the time or does the box basically work as it should with an occasional tantrum? If cycling the ignition clears it then it could just be the F125 switch?

What stored fault codes are there?
