Do you get a long high pitched beep along with the flashing green light when you select reverse or press the button on the dash?

The controller will detect a break in the circuit of a faulty sensor and disable both front and rear sensors.

You could use VCDS to check the measuring blocks and see if the front sensors are actually working and picking up a signal, in which case it could be the sensors speaker that has failed.

I have never done it before but I would think you would need someone to walk around the car so you can see if the sensor values change

One of mine is faulty, and the easiest way I found to test it by myself was pretty simple. Call up the measuring block in VCDS. As you say, they all show 255. Next, just attach a piece of paper to the bumper so that it covers a sensor. Then check VCDS. If the sensor is working, it will show 0 and not 255. Then just repeat the process on all the sensors. Mine is a front centre fault, which means a bumper off job, which I'll get around to... eventually.
