You do get some bad hand car washes though, but that's why I asked for recommendations. I mean, what's the alternative? Service station jet wash and dirty brush or automatic car wash? I know some automatic car washes can be ok, but it's still hit and miss.
The odd light scratch is unavoidable really, unless you have the time and facilities to wash it yourself every time.

I agree, there are exceptions, but I probably wouldn't go to somewhere I'd not checked out before, and that would probably be limited to local ones - like you, I occasionally use a local one for my cars (though admittedly, only exceptionally for the S8) - and even then, I supply the woollen mitt to them.
My usual second-best choice to doing it myself is me using a jet wash - that way I have a fair degree of control over anyone touching my car with anything
