Many thanks Ian, I knew someone like you would have the answer off pat.
That pin is labelled RFLS which I now know stands for Rückfahrlichtschalter (reversing light switch).  I was pretty sure there was such a connection but a look at the RNS-D and online didn't show anything definite.
The blue/red wire is very evident in the loom to that connector block.  I'll attack that another day.
Meanwhile over lunch today I stripped out the trim above the battery, found the cables to the boot lid and tapped into the blue/red wire there for "future use" (probably a bit of testing before the final wireless install). I did test it to confirm it was the correct one.
A bonus of removing the trim was that I got good access to the collapsing grommet on that side and glued it back together. And sorted out some other bits that were a bit "irregular".
A downside was that the cable loom was wrapped in the most disgusting gooey certoflex mess I've ever encountered.  White spirit sorted that out.

1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course.  (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!
