An O-ring!
This has resulted in a lack of oil pressure to the A pack (1-4 gears) so it started slipping as soon as the oil warmed up. This is the reason that I was able to drive it when cold.
Damage to other parts is fairly contained but will include a drum, bearing and obviously THE O-ring!
I did try to get to reverse gear to have a look but after pulling everything out of the gearbox, it was obvious that this wasn't possible without pulling the transfer box, torsen diff etc off and I'm not prepared to do that as it's all working well.
I'll post up photos tonight if I get a chance.

I for one am happy you've found the culprit. I would have hated to see this S8 parted out to act as organ donor to a project ride.
